A large reason [this was done] was because I wanted to see how the morals of the film were landing because it is a very morally grey film—that is very much how I am as a director.
I really think that the film is a strong commentary on the dangers of the over-sexualization of young girls. I think it goes back-and-forth between wow this is beautiful, this is sexy, this is fun—but, wow I am uncomfortable. You served as the screenwriter, director, producer, and star for this film. Easily deeming you an Oscar in my book for effort. What was it like to wear all those hats while working on this film? I have two people in the world [that I can trust]—well, maybe a couple of more with some of my key crew. I have a few people on my team who I just love to death—I hope I get to work with them over and over again. I was the writer, I definitely had a vision as the director, I definitely wanted to edit it myself because I knew what I wanted the tone of the film to be and I knew how I wanted the scenes to feel. It was brutally difficult doing everything.
We really were the sole-producers of the film and every single aspect of the production down to doing contracts, discussing legal terms for music and music production—it was a lot. It had to be done that way. Make the stuff you believe in. I used to push myself when I was really young to be brutally honest in my writing and in all of my work.

You were a child actress, but at what point did you decide that you wanted to get behind the camera, as well? Well, I was always a writer, from the time that I was really, really, really young and could, like, physically write. Then, I made my first short film when I was 12, and I made one a year as a part of a pull-out program film class, and it really stressed me out. The film that I made when I was in eighth grade, which I thought was my magnum opus, was this very dark psychological thriller that was definitely not what anyone was expecting at the Middle School of the Arts Showcase. It was really hard. I definitely had the most fun directing scenes that I was not in. Being in the scenes was extremely challenging.
Luckily, my DP and I had worked together for about two and a half weeks before the shoot, mapping out every shot, so that when we got to set, we knew exactly where we were putting the camera, which is the only way I could do a 19-day shoot with 195 scenes, some of which we were cutting on the day. I would definitely rather do a cameo in my next film or TV show or whatever I do next. Being a rookie director, were you nervous about directing screen veterans like Tate Donovan and Chris Messina?
