Harvey Ball was an American commercial artist. He is recognized as the earliest known designer of the smiley, which became an enduring and notable international. Today, many variations of the original smiley face and emoticons exist and differ much from the original design by Harvey Ball. Harvey Ball died on April 12, 2001, aged 79. Already in the 19th century there were typographic gimmicks with faces in newspaper printing. In 1938 Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote that by simply drawing facial expressions more flexible and multiform descriptions than only by adjectives are possible. After it was pieced together, the team saw that it had what appeared to be a large smiley face painted on it.
