More concerning to me though, is it looks like Gauthier just straight up flip-flopped on his desire to sign with the team that drafted him. Wanted to be a Flyer. That reeks of unprofessionalism, to me. Honestly, the Flyers might have dodged a bullet with this trade. This kid either needs to get his head on right or he needs to get some new advisors surrounding him. When was the last time we had two high profile prospects swapped like this?
The Flyers can keep an eye on him at Boston College, but not to the degree that they can in the pros, whether in Lehigh Valley or with the Flyers. Intriguing idea, though. If so, who? And I suspect that even if the Flyers are on the outskirts of the playoff race, they very well might promote a few of them. My guess is that Tyson Foerster will get a look as well, probably after James van Riemsdyk is shipped off at the trade deadline. I fully expect Egor Zamula and Ronnie Attard to get call-ups as well. John Tortorella has made reference to wanting to get a look at a few more defensemen currently down in the minors, with Zamula who obviously already was up this season and Attard the most likely candidates. They know what Seeler is. Any other candidates? Well, Ersson will likely be back, if he counts. If Gauthier signs at the end of his college season, he very well could get a look. There are lots of possible prospect call-up options.
The Flyers kept that information in-house until Monday, when the Boston College star forward got his wish and was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round draft pick. Flyers general manager Danny Briere said Gauthier told the team he was "built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer," when he was drafted but soon changed his tune. Gauthier was always considered a fairly safe pick due to his projectable frame and well-rounded game but he took his offense to another level this year and could end up being selected in the top-10 of the 2022 NHL Draft as a result. Gauthier is a skilled, active player in the offensive zone who has the ability to beat goaltenders with his powerful, accurate shot.
Gauthier can make plays off the wall, plays a solid physical game, and is an efficient distributor who utilizes his teammates effectively. His skating is good, not great, but he makes smart reads and maintains strong positioning all over the ice to help drive possession. Gauthier absolutely loves to engage in the physical aspect of defending when his opponents have the puck along the boards. Improvements As with any prospect, there are areas of their game which they may look to improve on to boost their draft stock and likelihood of making it to the next level at some point in their career. Below are a couple of areas in which Gauthier may look to brush up on.
Gauthier may look to be a little more selective with where he shoots the puck. He seems to be willing to get the puck on target from just about anywhere, but there are times when his accuracy is off. Somewhat of a similar point to above, Gauthier likes to take risks on the ice, especially when trying to get creative with the puck on his stick in the offensive third of the ice.

This is not the worst thing in the world, but some fans see someone over six-foot on the ice and expect them to toss their body around. Gauthier projects as a top-6 player with potential to hit it big, but his path towards becoming an elite first-liner is not as clear as some of the guys in the top-5 range. Or at least someone who shoots the puck. Gauthier fits that bill, too.
Despite the departure of Nikita Nesterenko and the likely departure of Trevor Kuntar, this team should still be flaunting a lot of firepower with its 4 incoming freshmen forwards from the USNTDP and the return of Gauthier and possibly Ambrosio alongside the other improving Eagles like Andre Gasseau. Not to mention, he has solid stickhandling, which allows him to create space for himself to buy time for a play to develop. Across those three games, Gauthier attempted 51 total passes in the offensive zone, and he completed 76. Of those pass attempts, 15. His accuracy in both high-danger 62. His high-danger pass completion was especially good, finishing well above the average of 48. Additionally, Gauthier finds soft spots in coverages to open himself up for teammates to set him up in high-danger. He loves going to the net-front and posing a threat there as well, cleaning up rebounds and getting deflections. Looking at his shot, he has a strong and quick release. Looking at his shooting stats over those tracked games, he fired 23 total shots, with 15 of them hitting the net 65. Of those shots, 39. It also helps that 88. What do these numbers tell us? These numbers tell us that Cutter Gauthier is a very smart forward that can beat teams in multiple ways, without being predictable. He does not attack high-danger very often, however, when he does, he is one of the most effective players in this class doing so. Add to the fact that his off-the-puck abilities is also high-end, he is one of the bigger forwards in the class, and he is a very shifty and slippery skater, and you have a player that has immense offensive upside. Gauthier has all the skills, size, and skating a general manager could ask for in a draft, offensively. That makes him not only a safer option early in the draft, but also a very high upside option as well. But how well does he do with moving the puck up the ice to gain offensive opportunities? That is where some concerns lie, though he certainly has the skills to improve. When it comes to breaking out of the defensive zone, across those three tracked games, Gauthier cleared the zone with possession on 52. Not to mention, his individual zone exit percentage.
