Standing still by the stream and noticing its changing shoreline, I wondered: Was my primary challenge my beleaguered sense of joy?
No, I realized; it was not. I was missing something more than pleasure and happiness. What had grown unsteady was my holy contentment and energizing sense of calling and purpose. I realized that I had been trying to accompany others as if my own joy were a fixed point along the stream. Naturally, I would prefer joy to be a constant. That might explain my current sense of feeling weary, overwhelmed, flooded -- maybe even washed up. What if, instead, my joy became as accommodating as a shoreline? What if, instead of resisting, I adjusted myself to the ever-changing waters, the inevitable ebbs and flows? I scanned up and down the stream looking for a single point that appeared permanent.
What I saw was a shoreline that was constantly adjusting, in countless ways, to the moving stream.
Even a few minutes outdoors helps clear our minds, body, and soul of anything that is weighing us down. Being outdoors in the spaciousness of nature is so soothing and helps provide perspective and clarity. It helps us replenish our personal power by increasing our sense of joy. How can you let a little bit of the outside world into your day today? Some ideas could be to walk during a work break, eat your lunch or take a break outside. During inclement weather, you can visit a florist, nursery or even enjoy the view from a window in the comfort of your home or office.
Today, dear one, consider spending some time doing what you love to do. Small increments of time doing what you love not only to benefit you, it helps all of those you interact with during the course of your day. It increases your level of joy which is contagious. You can begin with a small period of time. You can spend ten minutes planning a way to make doing this a reality. Feel free to use the Notes section in the back of this book to journal about doing what you love or to list some items you want to do or places you plan to visit or things you desire doing. Our best, most creative ideas and inspirations come to us in moments of pleasure, such as in the gift of daydreaming.

It would have been nice if my sense of spiritual and physical well-being had finally washed back in. Then I opened my eyes and looked down. I noticed the edge of the stream, where it met the land at my feet. That has made me wonder about the deeper and more persistent dynamics of ministry in a time of change.
