But rather than cry into his now redundant beer, Andy, pub manager Shonie Millward-Usher helped by a team of villagers and locals, have spent the last year turning the inn into a thriving hub of the community. Initially they stocked items like hand sanitiser, milk, bread and of course, toilet rolls. The service proved so popular that the duo quickly decided to develop it further and opened the Motto Shoppo in a disused former stable on the site.
The shoppo now stocks a far wider range of goods including milk, basic essentials and locally produced eggs. It has its own coffee machine, a charcuterie section and each morning has a fresh bread delivery. The shop was opened in June last year, by villager Phil Carnell who helped with the build.
And in their latest development they also plan to open the Motto Choppo - a barbers in a former dining area of the pub. The pub is also hoping to develop its series of circular walks, the Motto Trotto, beginning and ending at the inn. Through lockdown the pub has also been doing a takeaway food service - including Sunday roasts - which can also be delivered locally.
