Cutter Gauthier traded after refusing to sign with Philadelphia: 'He didn't want to be a Flyer'
Cutter Gauthier has logged many miles to get to the 2022 NHL Draft, including a couple unlikely stops along the way in chasing his dream. «Анахайм Дакс» подписал трёхлетний контракт новичка с 20-летним нападающим Каттером Готье, перешедшим в стан «уток» в результате обмена из «Филадельфии Флайерз» 8 января. The Ducks have acquired left wing Cutter Gauthier (GOH-chee-AY) from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a second-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The 21-year-old Drysdale was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 draft by Anaheim, and he has grown into a puck-moving defenseman who had 32 points during his first full NHL season in 2021-22. After missing nearly all of last season due to injury and getting a late start to this season because of another injury, Drysdale has one goal and four assists in 10 games for Anaheim. He also has 23 points in just 17 games this season for Boston College after getting 37 points in 32 games last season as a freshman for the Eagles. Latest News.
На чемпионате мира Готье забросил две шайбы и сделал десять передач в семи матчах. Голкипера летом 2022 года неожиданно призвали в армию перед тем, как он успел уехать в НХЛ, где у него был контракт на год с «Флайерз».
Cole Spicer with the finish. Gauthier absolutely loves to engage in the physical aspect of defending when his opponents have the puck along the boards. Improvements As with any prospect, there are areas of their game which they may look to improve on to boost their draft stock and likelihood of making it to the next level at some point in their career. Below are a couple of areas in which Gauthier may look to brush up on. Gauthier may look to be a little more selective with where he shoots the puck. He seems to be willing to get the puck on target from just about anywhere, but there are times when his accuracy is off. Somewhat of a similar point to above, Gauthier likes to take risks on the ice, especially when trying to get creative with the puck on his stick in the offensive third of the ice. Gauthier may look to choose the safer play over the riskier play at times, which would not cost his team possession of the puck, while at the same time, prolonging the time they have the puck in the offensive zone.
Stop Making A Big Deal About Cutter Gauthier Missing Development Camp
The former 5th overall pick is having a stellar season at Boston College as he is tied for second in goals with 13 and is eighth overall in points with 13. Gauthier is a power forward who is always looking to space to shoot with or without the puck. He played for Team USA at the 2023 Worlds Junior Championship as a first-line winger, scoring four goals and adding six assists in seven games. Gauthier will return to Boston College as a sophomore for the 2023-24 season and continue to work on transitioning from wing to center position. Mark Henry December 2022 — Gauthier has been having a remarkable first NCAA season with Boston College, putting on an elite offensive showing, currently leading the team in points with 16. Nick Richard June 2022 — Gauthier spent some time playing down the middle but was used mostly as a winger with the NTDP during his draft year. NHL teams, however, reportedly view him as a center at the pro level and Gauthier also stated at the NHL Scouting Combine that Boston College plans to play him as a center when he begins his collegiate career next fall.
The Flyers kept that information in-house until Monday, when the Boston College star forward got his wish and was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round draft pick.
Flyers general manager Danny Briere said Gauthier told the team he was "built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer," when he was drafted but soon changed his tune. With two goals and 12 points in seven games, he finished tied for first in scoring as the Americans won their sixth gold medal.
His ability to change directions and complete tight turns without losing speed is a key trait to have, especially at his size. His lower body strength is evident, and thanks to his strong edges, has great crossovers that allows his first few steps to be strong. From a technical standpoint, Gauthier is solid. His ankle bend is solid, as he consistently keeps his knees over his toes when skating full speed. Also, Gauthier has strong stride length, fully extending his back leg and maximizing the power behind each stride, which also aids his acceleration.
However, his knee bend needs work. Gauthier needs to get lower in his stride, bend his knees a bit more. While the power in his stride is solid, thanks to his lower-body strength, it could be better with better knee bend. His top speed also could improve, from really good to great. Gauthier certainly seems like he has solid potential as a skater. But it is a whole lot deeper than that. Gauthier is a dual-threat offensive player, with solid playmaking and goal-scoring abilities.
Focusing on his playmaking abilities first, Gauthier is a very balanced passer. He has strong vision and passing accuracy, which he pairs really well. Not to mention, he has solid stickhandling, which allows him to create space for himself to buy time for a play to develop. Across those three games, Gauthier attempted 51 total passes in the offensive zone, and he completed 76. Of those pass attempts, 15. His accuracy in both high-danger 62. His high-danger pass completion was especially good, finishing well above the average of 48.
Additionally, Gauthier finds soft spots in coverages to open himself up for teammates to set him up in high-danger. He loves going to the net-front and posing a threat there as well, cleaning up rebounds and getting deflections.
He has absolutely nothing to do with it. Another rumor he addressed involved Flyers head coach John Tortorella. Many speculated that Gauthier did not want to play for the veteran bench boss, who is a notoriously strict coach to play for. The 19-year-old Ducks prospect says the Stanley Cup-winning coach had nothing to do with it.

Готье угрожали смертью из-за обмена в "Анахайм" из "Филадельфии"
Starting with their puck support. The more we can get that to them. Cleaner exits, cleaner entries. A lot of the play can go through many of those guys. It will be a big part of our success. We want to have the puck. I played with him at the NTDP too. Making plays with him.
It is a lot of fun. That is a part of his game that is still developing. Getting used to these guys again. And there will be a few cuts so nobody wants to leave anything out there. I felt it for sure.
It is a difficult trade to make as he has a great future in front of him both on and off the ice. He has suited up for 123 NHL games across parts of three seasons with the Ducks, putting up eight goals and 45 points.
He has one goal and five points in 10 games so far this season and missed almost all of last season due to a torn labrum. Needless to say that the Ducks paid a high price to acquire Gauthier, but with Gauthier alongside the likes of Trevor Zegras, Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson the Ducks are loaded with young offensive talent. He missed majority of the 2022-23 campaign due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The right-shot blueliner set career highs in goals 4 , assists 28 and points 32 in 81 games during the 2021-22 season.
Where would he, Ersson and Alexei Kolosov stand? Ersson would have a clear leg up on his competition. Now, even if he comes over in 2023-24, he has to make up for lost time against Ersson. That means that Ersson will get at least a couple years to prove he can be an NHL backup or even a 1A before Kolosov even realistically enters the picture. Plus, Ersson looks like a really good young goalie. Really interesting question.
So I do believe the underlying theory behind your idea has merit. My general belief with player development is that if a player is ready for the next level, call him up. After all, there will be tricks and maneuvers that work at the collegiate level but will fail against pros. The Flyers can keep an eye on him at Boston College, but not to the degree that they can in the pros, whether in Lehigh Valley or with the Flyers. Intriguing idea, though. If so, who?
Gauthier never had bad hockey sense, or below average hockey sense. Gauthier was entrusted to be the primary creator of offense for a weak and undermanned BC team. It had nothing to do with playing center as opposed to wing. He had to create opportunities for his teammates.
He had to be the primary creator for an NCAA team. Impressively, he took to the role with nigh immediacy. He ultimately finished with 16 goals and 37 points in 32 games for that Boston College squad who was starving of offensive weapons besides him. It felt like he could have went for 2 points a game if he was really at his best. Then he plays against men at the World Championships, and he scores 9 points in 10 games including 7 goals. He set Team USA records with how many shots on goal he generated.

But, after a season at Boston College and a chat about his future, Gauthier made a surprising decision. Imagine the tension in the locker room if the news had leaked! NHL history is full of such instances.
