2017 Tiered NHL Draft Rankings
Marie Greyhounds, but he still projects as a top-six offensive talent in the NHL. He then exploded the next year and was one of the best players in the league and for Team Canada as they won gold at the World Juniors. His size and skill have turned him into a menace at the AHL level. His average footspeed is the only thing holding him back. His offense has slowed down a bit after turning pro in his draft-year-plus-one season but has been playing tough matchups and killing penalties. He moves around very well for a big man, allowing him to break up plays and then join the ensuing rush. His average skating and one-dimensional game have been exposed and the high-end puck skills are yet to shine through. More time in the AHL could be helpful. He has a good, quick wrist shot and passes the puck well enough, but his lack of foot speed holds him back from being a truly dynamic player.
Another player in this class who has struggled with injuries, he missed all of 2018-19 due to a concussion. He played just 40 games in the AHL last year and really blossomed near the end of the season with 11 points in his last 13 games. At six-foot-two, 185-pounds, he could add some weight but has managed without it due to his smooth skating stride and four-way quickness. He already looks like a powerplay anchor-type, but we could very well not have seen the best of Timmins due to the injury problems. He had a decent rookie season in the NHL, scoring 20 points in 56 games, but struggled to keep up with the increased pace of the league. He is most effective from mid-range, with a lethal wrist shot. He can skate and has good hands, but his small stature may hold him back from being more than a secondary scorer. He is an all-round rearguard with average offensive ability who carries his six-foot-four, 216-pound frame around very well.
He is reliable defensively, able to keep up with quick forwards and break up play with his long reach or lay the body. Should be a useful NHLer.
The Canucks flew Pettersson out to Vancouver after the combine and he met the Sedins at the gym. Fun fact: Pettersson is the younger brother of Predators 2013 pick Emil Pettersson. Great pick by Vancouver. I had Elias Pettersson at No. Reminds me a lot of Filip Forsberg.
With the No. A veteran scout we know loved Makar so much, he stopped watching him play this winter. Very good puck management. Offensive upside with a great shot and great vision. Washington re-upped with T. Oshie earlier in the day. The Dallas Stars explored trading the No.
In the offensive zone, he is one of the most dangerous players in the league, with an incredibly powerful and accurate release — all the more impressive considering how lanky is. He produces highlight-reel plays night in, night out, with tremendous hands in tight. In his own zone, he is efficient at breaking up play with an active stick. Projected as a second-line centre, Pettersson could end up being one of the best middle-men in the league very soon. His incredible mobility combined with some of the best hands and shot in the league makes him a threat from anywhere on the ice. Whereas Makar usually creates offence rushing full-speed at defenders, Heiskanen is much more subtle. He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target.
He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates. He has shown some flair this season, too.
Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay.
The NHL Draft to me is about drafting the rarest high-level skillsets you can find, especially up high, and to swing for the fences on someone you really like in the late rounds, or go after a goalie or two who can stop a puck.
Have fun today everyone, the future is now, and this is what we work towards. Starting on Monday?
No change at the top as the top two spots still belong to Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier. The biggest gains in the rankins belong to Nick Suzuki and Erik Brannstrom, both jumping up nine spots with Kailer Yamamoto up four. The biggest fallers are Klim Kostin and Isaac Ratcliffe who dropped nine spots each, while Eric Rasmussen dropped six. He is a dynamic offensive player, but an underrated defensive player as well.
Yamamoto has tremendous hands, he is a great stickhandler and can bury goals in tight to the goalie. He also is very quick to loose pucks with great acceleration and a really quick first step. More a play maker than a goal scorer, he uses his quickness and stickhandling to open up passing lanes.
Yamamoto can feather passes tape-to-tape to his linemates and has outstanding vision. He also put up 15 goals and 34 points in 37 games playing in the under 20 SuperElite league. A versatile player, Vesalainen has experience playing both wings. He has excellent size, and uses it to protect the puck along the boards and extend plays in the cycle. Gifted with a large wing-span, Vesalainen takes advantage of it to play keep-away with defenders. A budding power forward, Vesalainen wins battles along the boards, and is not afraid to fight through checks to get to the front of the net.
Vesalainen also has an excellent shot. His skating is surprisingly quick, and his stride long and fluid. He plays a strong two-way game and covers a lot of ground for a big man. Hague scored 14 goals last season, showing off a powerful slap shot on the power play. He is able to move laterally and walk the line to open up shooting lanes to get his shot through. Hague could stand to improve his passing skills this season though.
He makes a decent breakout pass from his own end, but needs to be a bit more patient with the puck at the oppositions blue. The big man also shows good defensive instincts for a player his age. Vaakanainen has excellent hockey IQ. He reads the play very well in both the offensive and defensive ends of the ice. He chooses to make the smart plays both with and without the puck. Defensively he has great gap control and positioning.
He also can skate the puck out of danger in his own zone, and start the transition game with a good first pass. Offensively he has a hard accurate shot, and the vision to be a play maker from the blue line. He has a great first step, excellent agility, and the edge work necessary to make quick cuts on a dime. He combines this with the soft hands to control the puck and make plays in tight spaces and at top speed. Morand is deadly in close to the net. He can make a quick deke on a goaltender, fire the puck to the top of the net, or make a quick pass to a teammate.
Morand might be small, but he is not afraid to get involved in battles for the puck in the corner, or in front of the net. He is often found at the middle of post-whistle scrums as well.
This expansion drastically shifted the 2017 draft class, as cap-strapped franchises give away assets by the handful in order to convince the Golden Knights to take on their bad contracts. Nico Hischier — New Jersey Devils After winning the 2017 Draft lottery despite having the fifth-best odds, the New Jersey Devils found themselves in a good position despite failing to meet their lofty expectations heading into the 2016-17 season. Hischier quickly made himself known in New Jersey, as he took the ice immediately in 2017-18, and posted 52 points, which was the second-most on the team behind only Hall, who went on the win the 2018 Hart Trophy.
His performance helped to call the Devils back into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nico Hischier was named captain of the New Jersey Devils in 2021. Injuries have slowed his production on the ice, as the 2021-22 season was the first time he managed to surpass his rookie scoring by playing 70 games and posting 60 points. Hischier is far from a bust, however. The offensively gifted forward was scoring at a torrid pace in the Western Hockey League WHL , and he had the size and total toolkit that general managers dream of when making a top selection.
However, that can be expected from a teenager playing against men, so the future still looked bright. In 2019 he was diagnosed with a non-hockey-related migraine disorder , which kept him out of hockey for more than 17 months. While he was expected to work his way back into a role for Philadelphia, the team decided to move on from him in the 2021 offseason, where they traded him to the Golden Knights. Now, Patrick finds himself in a tough position. While he has one-year remaining on the contract extension he signed with Vegas , the Golden Knights are looking to pinch every penny they can to be cap compliant once again.
This could lead him to traded if he starts the 2022-23 season slowly, which may hurt his opportunities to excel alongside a playoff-caliber team. Miro Heiskanen — Dallas Stars With the third-overall pick, the Dallas Stars decided to take the first defenseman off the board by selecting Finnish prospect Miro Heiskanen. By taking on more the 23 minutes of ice-time each night as a rookie, he was a top candidate for the Calder Trophy despite lacking in scoring that often drives conversation surrounding that award. He consistently eats 23 to 25 minutes of ice-time each night, puts up needed points, and just acts as a stalwart on the blue line that every team dreams of. Given everything, this was a great selection by Dallas, as they have one of the top young defensemen locked down to a reasonable deal through his prime years.
Mittelstadt ripped apart the high school circuit averaging 2. He fell short though of leading his hometown Eden Prairie to a state championship, falling in the semi-finals. Mittelstadt was questioned about returning for his senior year amid concerns that his development could be stunted. However, he helped allay some of those concerns with impressive stints in the USHL, wrapped around his high school season, recording 30 points in 24 games - for a 1. The Peterborough, Ontario native infuriated with his inconsistent and incomplete defensive work habits but, at the end of the day, may be the best goal-scoring prospect in this draft class. He finished fifth in the OHL with 44 goals and added another 10 goals in 20 playoff games. Slick-skating defenceman Cale Makar of the Brooks Bandits is ranked seventh. Makar still has plenty of growing to do in terms of learning how to harness and deploy his exceptional talents. His education will be in good hands for his upcoming freshman season at the University of Massachusetts. Sorting out the rest of the top 10 has been a convoluted journey since the initial rankings were published last fall.
Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks was another big riser, moving up from 24th - in the preliminary ranking - to grab the No. A cerebral two-way pivot with good size and skill, the Winnipeg native led Portland and tied for seventh in WHL scoring during a spectacular breakout season - in which he more than tripled his rookie numbers from 2015-16.

Carolina previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on September 11, 2015, that sent Dennis Robertson, Jake Massie and a fifth-round pick in 2017 to Chicago in exchange for Kris Versteeg, Joakim Nordstrom and this pick. Scouts describe a great deal of inconsistency to his game. He piled up 30 goals in just 52 games in the USHL thanks to an elite shot and a complete shooting arsenal that enables him to beat goaltenders from just about anywhere in the offensive zone. He finishes plays more than he makes them.
He has some difficulty dealing with heavy forechecks, but he thinks his way around problems. Cloud team. Somewhat heavy feet and amount of offensive upside at the next level are the question marks. Scouts mention his tendency to pass up shooting opportunities. He can cover ice well once moving.
A high-character kid loved by his coaches, he possesses good offensive instincts and finished third in the OHL for goals by a defenceman with 19.
The basic processes for an expansion draft had already been defined in March 2016. These state that each team could protect either seven forwards , three defenders and one goalkeeper or eight field players regardless of their playing position and one goalkeeper from the selection process. The choice of the respective option was up to each franchise itself. Seven of the 30 franchises opted for the latter option, which thus effectively comprises two less protected players. Of these, in turn, six teams Arizona, Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Jersey and Pittsburgh protected four defenders and four attackers, only the New York Islanders chose five defenders and only three strikers. Regardless of the official lists, however, all teams can agree on barter deals with the Golden Knights and give them additional players or draft options if certain players are selected or not selected in the Expansion Draft.

2017 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
His 94 deking, 95 hand-eye, 94 puck control, and 95 passing all make him the centrepiece of an offensive move, as do his 90 acceleration and 89 speed. The left-shot winger is reasonably fast, with 90 acceleration and 89 speed, and has good offensive awareness with a rating of 90. However, the point of playing Pavelski is to spot him open, pass him the puck, and then let his 95 slap shot accuracy, 94 slap shot power, 95 wrist shot accuracy, and 94 wrist shot power do the rest. Still, taking Spencer Downie in the second round of this simulation was a wise move, with him rapidly developing into a netminder capable of contending in the NHL. Even at 22-years-old, Downie reaches an 81 overall rating, with his only lacking attribute that matters being his 67 poise — which will develop with more experience.
Make no mistake — the list of first overall picks who missed half a season from injury is both short and disconcerting. Nevertheless, a healthy Patrick is next to unstoppable, and his combination of power and skill from the center ice position is unmatched in this specific draft year. Casey Mittelstadt, the skilled Minnesota-raised center who bookended a dominant season with Eden Prairie High by crushing USHL competition to a tune of a league-best 1. Poor upper-body strength results at the recent combine notwithstanding , Mittelstadt is capable of logging massive minutes, shouldering top-line center responsibilities and producing no matter how much attention he gets from opposing coaches. Swiss star Nico Hischier of the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec League is both smart and skilled enough to go first overall, as he led all CHL rookies in scoring and carried a thin roster to the postseason. Playing center with a wiry frame is perfectly normal in major junior, but Hischier will need to fill out before competing and succeeding against the bigger pivots in the NHL. The biggest riser in the first round is a kid who continued to prove me wrong all season. It may seem as though sublime defender Cale Makar from the Brooks Bandits is simply a flavor-of-the-month kind of prospect because of the way he crushed a lesser-known league like the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
