He arrived in the US to train as a pilot, but like al Hazmi, fell short of requirements and was demoted to being a "muscle hijacker". At this point he travelled back to see his family in Yemen for a month and had to be convinced to return to Afghanistan for training. He arrived in the US in June 2001, practicing for the attacks in Florida. Like many of his contemporaries he fought in Chechnya, where he was sent to Afghanistan for an al Qaeda training camp.
