Every Awful Thing Trump Has Promised to Do in a Second Term The Austin Police Department spent nearly a month trying to catch the serial bomber without any luck, until a major break in the case this week cracked the investigation wide open.
In the past day, police were able to obtain surveillance footage that showed the suspect at a FedEx store in Sunset Valley, a small suburb surrounded by Austin, after they learned the bomber shipped explosive devices from that location. Along with other evidence, including store receipts, authorities were able to trace the suspect back to the Williamson County hotel Tuesday night, officials said. The wave of bombings began March 2nd, when Anthony Stephen House , a 39-year-old father and athlete, was killed by a package bomb left on his front porch.
The suspect, Mark Anthony Conditt, 23, reportedly killed himself when he detonated a device in his vehicle while pursued by Austin police in nearby Round Rock, Texas, early Wednesday morning. Another package, which did not detonate, was found at a different facility, which was sent from Austin and headed elsewhere in the city. Evidence at the scene, including surveillance photos, led authorities to Conditt. In security camera photos, police believe Conditt dropped off the package bombs at the FedEx facility while wearing a wig. Still, authorities were able to learn enough from the footage that they tracked him down.

Investigators also determined that Conditt purchased signs like the one used to anchor the tripwire-rigged device that detonated Sunday night, Abbott said.
Conditt was not a military veteran, an early theory given the explosives expertise. Abbott told reporters Wednesday that he appeared to have bought the bomb components from Home Depot, and federal investigators are examining his Internet search history to see how self-taught his bomb-making skills might have been.
Police now think the shared name was just a coincidence. Even after three bombings, investigators were still unsure whether they were dealing with a single attacker. A week later, they were. By then, police had urged residents to report any strange packages. The warning flooded 911 operators with more than 1,000 calls. Hours later, another explosion seemed to be his answer.

The decision comes one year after ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and Military Times published an investigation exposing how hundreds of soldiers charged with violent crimes were administratively discharged instead of facing a court martial. Instead, the newly created Office of Special Trial Counsel, a group of military attorneys who specialize in handling cases involving violent crimes, must also approve the decision. The new rule will apply only to cases that fall under the purview of the Office of Special Trial Counsel, including sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, kidnapping and murder. In 2021, Congress authorized creation of the new legal office — one for each military branch except the U. As of December, attorneys with this special office, and not commanders, now decide whether to prosecute cases related to those serious offenses. Army officials told the news organizations that the change in discharge authority was made in response to the creation of the Office of Special Trial Counsel. As far back as 1978, a federal watchdog agency called for the U. Department of Defense to end its policy of allowing service members accused of crimes to leave the military to avoid going to court. Armed forces leaders continued the practice anyway. Last year, ProPublica, the Tribune and Military Times found that more than half of the 900 soldiers who were allowed to leave the Army in the previous decade rather than go to trial had been accused of violent crimes, including sexual assault and domestic violence, according to an analysis of roughly 8,000 Army courts-martial cases that reached arraignment. These soldiers had to acknowledge that they committed an offense that could be punishable under military law but did not have to admit guilt to a specific crime or face any other consequences that can come with a conviction, like registering as a sex offender. Don Christensen, who is now in private practice. If the attorneys want to drop a charge, the commander still has the option to impose a range of other administrative punishments, Army officials said. But the fourth bomb was seemingly detonated at random, injuring Will Grote, 22, and Colton Mathis, 23 - who were both white - when they triggered a tripwire. Dan Defenbaugh, a former FBI bomb investigator, previously warned police could "have a serial killer on their hands".
