Rising from his sick bed, Debs delivered a series of antiwar speeches; he was arrested, charged with impeding the war effort, convicted and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. In the eyes of many, it was one of his finest moments. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class I am in it, while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. Harding, a Republican, freed Debs and 23 other prisoners of conscience.

But the socialist ideal lived on, inspiring a new generation of social reformers in the 1930s who, under the banner of the New Deal, enacted most of the programs and policies called for in the Socialist Party platform of 1912. It was not the socialist commonwealth, but it was a genuine achievement—one for which Debs and his followers legitimately could claim some credit. Message and data rates apply. William McKinley won the race with a total of 7,207,923 votes, while Debs garnered just 86,935. Still, it was a start.

Debs ran again in 1904, this time as a member of the next political party he helped establish: the Socialist Party of America. His totals jumped to around 402,000 votes ; in 1908, he returned with 420,000 votes , losing to Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft , respectively. Debs fell short once again, but his total ballooned to more than 900,000 votes —6 percent of the popular vote. It would be another eight years before his fifth and final presidential campaign—arguably one of the strangest the country has seen. The profit system is responsible for it all. Debs traveled across the Northeast to speak to his base of frustrated workers looking for a unifying voice against war. On April 6, 1917, the United States officially declared war against Germany. Debs knew the risks he was taking with his anti-war crusade, but he continued throughout the Midwest, culminating in a speech at a Socialist Party gathering in Canton, Ohio, on June 16, 1918.

Eugene V. Debs Biography, Life, Interesting Facts

Eugene Debs was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 5, 1855, to the family of French immigrants from Alsace, Jean Daniel and Marguerite Mari Bettrich Debs. I'm not sure whether Donald Trump has ever heard of Eugene Debs, the austerely incorruptible early leader of America's Socialist Party. Bernie and Eugene Debs cadence and intonations are eerily similar but in the most comforting way.

Eugene Debs and the Kingdom of Evil

This day in 1919, Socialist leader Eugene V Debs is sent to prison for violating the Espionage Act in his opposition to WWI. Eugene Victor Debs (1855–1926) was a radical American trade union leader and politician. Trade unionist Eugene V. Debs was a major organizer of the American Railway Union and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). In the election of 1920, Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist Party presidential candidate, polled nearly a million votes without ever hitting the campaign trail. He ran five times, the last time from prison in 1920 when he received almost a million votes, and even though he lost he changed political history. Silent film clips of Mr. Debs were shown and a video clip of Senator Bernie Sanders being interviewed about Mr.

That achievement probably became the most memorable incident of his long career, and was almost always worth a sentence in history textbooks written many decades later. Depending upon the speed of the judicial process, we face the very real prospect of former President Donald J. Trump running—and winning—the Presidency while sitting on his cot in state or federal prison. His bitter political enemies recognized the enormous, unfiltered power of that latter communication tool, and after he reached the White House, they exerted enormous pressure upon Twitter to begin censoring him. The notion of an American tech company restricting the political speech of a sitting American President seemed like something out of a Monty Python sketch, but it actually happened. Meanwhile, many of his leading activist supporters and pundit allies were completely purged from that platform , blows that greatly hindered his reelection campaign. With Trump banned from Twitter in early 2021, his political standing soon ebbed away as more and more of his low-information political base gradually forgot about him. This led many observers to conclude that his time had passed and some rival would likely capture the Republican nomination in the 2024 primaries. With such exciting new topics, the endless Trump Political Reality show had suddenly returned as popular entertainment, regaining the very high ratings it had previously enjoyed. Trump once again became the great hero of his populist Republican supporters, with recent polls showing he was drawing far more support in the 2024 primaries than all his Republican rivals combined. Indeed, some cynical observers even suggested that this outcome might have been intentional. Perhaps the Democrats regarded Trump as the weakest Republican candidate they might face in 2024, and sought to ensure his renomination. Such a deeply Machiavellian strategy might be possible, but all of these various prosecutions and trials will surely keep Trump at the top of the news cycle from now until November 2024, whether Election Day finds him still on trial or already serving time behind bars. As of a week ago, Trump had already been facing 71 separate state and federal felony indictments. Then he was struck by the weightiest federal charge of all, accusing him of organizing a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results. These days American society is deeply polarized and most of the charges against Trump will be tried in venues such as DC, Manhattan, and Atlanta where the jury-pools are sure to be heavily larded with Trump-haters. With so many dozens of serious charges against him, our 45th President seems likely to end up behind bars.

His father came from a prosperous family and owned a textile mill and meat market. He left home at 14 to work on the railroad and soon became involved in union activity. He joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in 1875, where he soon became prominent figure. In 1884, elected as a Democrat , he served a term in the Indiana General Assembly. Work with organized labor During its earlier years, the BLF was a relatively moderate and conservative organization, advocating for class collaboration and focusing primarily on providing mutual benefits and service for workers. For the first fourteen years of its existence 1873-1887 , it never attempted or authorized a strike. Debs largely followed the same line as the Brotherhood at large during these years. This state of affairs was to change quite suddenly in early 1888.

On April 6, 1917, the United States officially declared war against Germany. Debs knew the risks he was taking with his anti-war crusade, but he continued throughout the Midwest, culminating in a speech at a Socialist Party gathering in Canton, Ohio, on June 16, 1918. For two hours, the impassioned orator made his case, criticizing everything from the war to the Sedition Act to the military draft. The master class has had all to gain and nothing to lose, while the subject class has had nothing to gain and all to lose—especially their lives. The jury found him guilty on three counts of violating the Espionage and Sedition acts.

On September 18, 1918, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. While he was accustomed to campaigning by train and speaking in front of thousands, in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, Debs was allowed [ PDF ] to give one political statement every week, which was then handed over to news wires. Amazingly, Debs still captured 3. Harding or his opponent, James M. Indeed, Debs had left prison almost as a mythic figure to his followers—50,000 of whom lined up to watch his train pull in upon his return to Terra Haute.

ORDER IT NOW Although almost forgotten today, Debs was a very prominent political figure a century ago, and he usually received brief mention in my introductory history textbooks, which occasionally noted the five times he had run for the Presidency on the Socialist Party ticket. Woodrow Wilson, which was won by the latter. Historian James Chace, former managing editor of Foreign Affairs, told that story in an interesting 2004 book. So once the votes were counted and after a failed attempt to negotiate peace , Wilson soon reversed himself and took America into the stalemated European conflict. Armies of many millions had already spent several years clashing on the Western Front, and only an enormous American force could tip the balance, so Wilson enacted a military draft, the first and only such measure in our national history except for the Civil War fought more than two generations earlier. Forcing millions of Americans to fight and die thousands of miles from home in a foreign war proved extremely unpopular in many parts of the country, and harsh sedition laws were soon passed, threatening long prison sentences for anyone who challenged those controversial government policies.

That exemplary punishment hardly deterred him or his committed supporters, so the Socialist Party nominated him as its candidate in the 1920 Presidential race. Despite campaigning from his prison cell, he still won nearly a million votes—3.

Commerce radiating out of the Chicago metropolitan area ground to a halt, triggering a national crisis. A coalition of railway owners conspired with the attorney general to issue a federal injunction against the strikers an unprecedented tactic that the Supreme Court only ruled legal after the fact , the Democratic administration called in the national guard against the strikers, and Debs was sent to jail.

The episode showed Debs that when workers exercise control over both capital and their own labor at the industry-wide level, it is regarded as an overwhelming crisis, not the assertion of democratic bargaining rights. Without realizing it, the ARU was not striking for equal rights within a democratic state but at the core of capitalist power: its command of labor backed by the right to private property. Property and Freedom In his early years, Debs had accepted the sanctity of private property while insisting that labor had an equal right to shape how property was used. When Debs became a Marxist, he abandoned what is perhaps the cardinal myth of American nationalism: that private property and freedom are intimately connected. In early America, the surest route to this kind of republican freedom was private ownership of land or small capital. With open access to private property, every settler would have an equal chance to acquire property and bargain with others, creating a nexus of voluntary agreements among free and equal partners.

After his encounter with Marxism, Debs came to view the right to private property not as the basis of liberty, but a title to despotism. It consists in living labor serving accumulated labor as a means of maintaining and multiplying the exchange value of the latter. Under capitalism, the labor process that makes capital productive is designed so that the investment it represents returns a profit. Eugene Debs c. The young Debs also intuited the right goal: labor should control capital, not the other way around. If labor really wanted to control capital in the general interests of society, workers needed to challenge the institution of private property outright.

In capitalism, private property primarily protects domination, not liberty. Economic liberty would not be realized in the pursuit of individual advantage but through collective self-government: participating in democratically planned production and distribution according to need.
