The cops said between five and 10 seconds passed between the time they arrived on the scene and the time they shot Vassell. In 2013, NYPD officers shot and killed a 16-year-old kid who they said was acting suspiciously and had a gun. In 2008, in another incident that lasted only seconds , NYPD officers fired 50 bullets that killed Sean Bell on the day of his wedding after his car hit an unmarked police vehicle.

As much as the incident itself, the reaction to his death speaks to the way that homeless people have been dehumanised in the US that Neely was Black is also surely more than incidental. In the years since the pandemic, major American cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco have been the sites of moral panics about homelessness, mental illness and addiction. Still, even if a narrative is false, people can still buy into it, and it can still shape their perceptions of the world and those around them.
But some elected officials are already calling it a lynching, others a murder. The Medical Examiner has ruled it a "homicide. He had the audacity to publicly yell about that massive injustice, so they killed him," wrote State Senator Jabari Brisport.

Read our interview transcript below. LRM: What initially started you on this project of Greta? Neil Jordan: I was sent the script. The script was intriguing. Most intriguing. There were several things that intrigued me. One was that, obviously, [the story] is between three women. Two women, and the third being Maika [Monroe]. I thought that was really cool idea.
There were several things in the screenplay that was written by a gentleman named Ray Wright. The first was the handbag. The look of that handbag I thought it was so simple and so chilling really. There were several standout sequences as well. The stalking with the phone. The sending the phone messages back and forwards. And the double dream. I loved it. There were the things that intrigued me.
I thought if I can explore these characters, explore the obsession, the fact that it was between two women—it made the obsessional nature of the relationship more interesting.

Can you? I relied on the original writer. I relied on his knowledge of American law. LRM: That is actually frightening. After Greta, do you have any upcoming projects? I wrote a novel called the Drowned Detective. I really want to make a movie about that.
The script is very elegant. LRM: One last question. A lot of people know you for your Oscar winning work on the Crying Game. Could you remark about this film? How proud were you with that? Neil Jordan: I was kind of amazed that people liked it. People do want movies to mean something.
