She was an extraordinary woman whose great love of the theatre, teaching and acting was surpassed only by her deep love for her family.
Tall and elegant and dark-haired, Seldes was a formidable presence on stage and a drama queen through and through. She made her Broadway debut in 1947 and has been drawing raves ever since. Unforgettable in Albee s enigmatic Three Tall Women, she was the sort of actress who stole every scene just by entering it.
Seldes, who grew up on Henderson Place in Manhattan near Gracie Mansion, came from a literary family. Her father was the critic and intellectual gadfly Gilbert Seldes, and her uncle was the journalist and media critic George Seldes. Marian often used intermissions and the time between matinee and evening performances to write book reviews, and published two books of her own, The Bright Lights: A Theater Life and Time Together.

Career Trained for the stage, Seldes made her Broadway theatre debut in 1948 in a production of Medea. She went on to an illustrious career in which she earned five Tony Award nominations, winning her first time out in 1967 for A Delicate Balance. In addition to performing in live theatre, Seldes began acting in television in 1952 in a Hallmark Hall of Fame production that marked the first of many guest star roles. She also performed in a number of motion pictures and in radio plays.

Her paternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, and her mother was from an Episcopalian family with deep roots in the United States. She honed her craft with the legendary Broadway diva, Katharine Cornell , with whom she appeared in the play, "That Lady", in the 1949-50 season.
