In March 2020, everything changed. Like others who were lucky to have a job that allowed it, I suddenly faced working from home for an indefinite period of time. Time gained from not commuting was a gift, but losing the structure and social contact going into the office provides meant my mental health took a steep downturn. I envied friends with gardens or who lived in places near the sea or the countryside and wished I was there too.
This situation has taken away the separation of home and work life and made me feel isolated and lonely. But at times during the pandemic, I felt I might no longer be able to live on my own. Despite the challenges, I still wanted my own space. But now, as restrictions lift in England, I am slowly rediscovering the absolute joy of living alone. The Bank Holiday weekend was a real turning point.
I have more fulfilling days. Time in my flat is mine and the lines between home and work are no longer blurred. I am finding joy again in reading, cooking, writing, lifting weights and using my mini trampoline.
As someone with no children, I have the time and money to spend on experiences and treats such as brunch and beauty appointments. Living alone and being single also means treatments like having my hair washed provide human touch that is truly nourishing. As I look forward to the rest of 2021 with cautious optimism, I feel quietly confident that I will rediscover and relish all the joys of living alone once again, being aware of my privilege while feeling grateful for the things that were taken away and are slowly coming back. My own efforts to revive my prayer practice have gone the way of my exercise plans. At first, I let it all go to focus on emergency decisions. Later, I resolved to live differently. But the pressures continued to humble my resolve, and I confronted hard questions: Where has my motivation gone? How will I find enough energy to care for myself, let alone the people I serve? So now what? I wish I could say I heard an easy answer. It would have been nice if my sense of spiritual and physical well-being had finally washed back in. Then I opened my eyes and looked down. I noticed the edge of the stream, where it met the land at my feet. That has made me wonder about the deeper and more persistent dynamics of ministry in a time of change.

Some ideas could be to walk during a work break, eat your lunch or take a break outside. During inclement weather, you can visit a florist, nursery or even enjoy the view from a window in the comfort of your home or office. Today, dear one, consider spending some time doing what you love to do. Small increments of time doing what you love not only to benefit you, it helps all of those you interact with during the course of your day. It increases your level of joy which is contagious.
