But the romantic movie-making tradition, passed down in the 1920s from Hollywood to British film, prescribes that a dramatic build-up with two opposite-sex characters demands closure where they fall in love, and implicitly live happily ever after. I shall not here go into the details of that ending so as not to spoil it for you entirely. But both when the play premiered in 1914 and when the film did so in 1938, this word was highly controversial. In fact, that single word alone helped to draw an audience to the theatres. This film is best enjoyed if you have previously only seen My Fair Lady, or if you are somehow entirely unfamiliar with this entire story.
With intensive effort Eliza makes progress, and Higgins introduces her to his mother Marie Lohr while local gentleman Freddy David Tree falls in love with Eliza at first sight. The big test looms at a gala event hosted by the Ambassador of Transylvania. An adaptation of the 1913 George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion boasts a witty, dynamic script, clashing characters, multiple attractive settings and brisk pacing. The film gently mocks both upper class haughtiness and working class contentment, with only Eliza possessing the courage to test the divide. Howard looking younger than his 45 years brings an uncompromising edge to the role of a stubbornly confirmed batchelor refusing any accommodation in his approach to life.
Barely two or three sentences quickly explains where his money came from, and then he is gone again. He was neither understated nor over the top. I liked his character as an interesting plot device and comic relief at the same time. The things that the characters said were always meaningful and delivered in an interesting way. Shaw sure had a talent for clever quips and witty dialogue. However, I learned something interesting about Shaw, himself, that made me lose a little respect for him, as a person. They might as well send some honor to George for being King of England.

Asquith does an excellent job of opening up the story so it does not seem unnecessarily stagey. I had a smile on my face throughout. Very warmly recommended. They might as well send some honour to George for being King of England.

Shaw had already seen her onstage as Eliza Doolittle in the Shaw Festival at Malvern, and was so impressed that he recommended her to Pascal. Anthony Asquith, who shared billing with his associate director and star, Leslie Howard, had not had a good film for several years. But Pygmalion placed him firmly in the front rank of British directors for his brilliant handling of this delicately satirical material. And it enjoyed as much of a critical success as it was popular with audiences.
Shaw and Gabriel Pascal were thus encouraged to plan further collaborations on the filming of Shaw plays. Wendy Hiller suddenly found herself an important film star, sought after by both Hollywood and British studios, although she remained faithful to the stage and most selective in her future movie roles.

As for Wendy Hiller, I honestly think that she could not compete with Audrey Hepburn, even if she was much more natural in several scenes than Audrey. The direction of Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard who was, of course, also in the leading role was perfect and truthful to the story. I consider it one of the best films of the 1930s and it was a huge success at the box-office, in 1938.
At a tea party, in her first public testing, she blurted out, "Not bloody likely" and scandalized the attendees. In the process of teaching her, Higgins fell in love with her, although she was also attracted by upper class gentleman Freddy Eynsford-Hill David Tree.
Its sole award was for Best Screenplay. To do so, Higgins must transform her thick-accented voice, by coaching her to speak proper English with elocution lessons, teaching her manners, and drilling her so that she will be educated. I sold flowers.

Her coarse language and unrefined pronunciation agitate his senses. Higgins boasts to his colleague Colonel George Pickering Scott Sunderland that with three to six months of training he can pass Eliza off as a duchess. The next morning she shows up at his doorstep, reluctantly willing to undergo the transformation. Soon her father Alfred Wilfrid Lawson appears, looking for a few pounds in return for giving up his daughter.
