Like the Devils, the Stars will be making a historic pick for their franchise, picking inside the top three for the first time. They never pick higher than fifth, when they took Richard Jackman in the 1996 Draft. The Stars entered as the team with the eighth highest team of winning the Lottery. Unfortunately for Colorado, the Lottery played out in their worst-case scenario, with them falling to the fourth overall pick.

Philadelphia The Flyers traded up twice early on in the draft to get their guy. I like that; why risk missing on Morgan Frost or Isaac Ratcliffe if you really like them? GM Ron Hextall has been a draft master during his tenure in Philly, stacking picks and making nice selections. This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer.
Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder.
Patrick excelled in the WHL playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings, registering 92 goals and 205 points in 163 regular season games with the club. At just 17 years old, Patrick finished eighth in the WHL in goals 41 , tied for third in assists 61 with Barzal, and finished fifth in the league in total points with 102, out pacing players like Braydon Point 88 and Barzal 88 by a wide margin.
He is a really good young man. Patrick would go on to miss his entire third season with the Flyers with what is believed to be a migraine disorder. A real shame as I believe he would have excelled playing under current Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault.
In the season leading up to the draft Heiskanen excelled playing against grown men for Helsinki as he recorded 11 goals and 23 points in just 30 games in his second season for the club.
Their successful 2016-17 season left them with lower picks -- their first was winger Kailer Yamamoto at 22 -- but the Oilers managed to make solid selections. After the diminutive, speedy Yamamoto, the Oilers added not only talent but size, as all six of their subsequent picks were 6-foot-2 or taller. Los Angeles got a tremendous value in Gabriel Vilardi, a 200-foot player who really excels down low, at No. Yet the Blues got a potential first-round steal of their own, added intriguing prospects in later rounds and made a pair of shrewd trades. With the pick they received, they snagged Klim Kostin, a Russian forward oozing with potential.
Originally considered a surefire top three pick early in the season, he could go anywhere from 5-20 in the draft.
Skating wise, he has great power in his stride and beats many junior-level players with ease. Offensively, he mostly stays away from the big load ups from the point, more often than not opting for an efficient approach focused on getting shots through to the net. He tore apart the U18s with six goals and 13 points in seven games and chipped in a couple of points at the World Juniors as a 17-year-old. Scouts describe a great deal of inconsistency to his game. He piled up 30 goals in just 52 games in the USHL thanks to an elite shot and a complete shooting arsenal that enables him to beat goaltenders from just about anywhere in the offensive zone. He finishes plays more than he makes them. He has some difficulty dealing with heavy forechecks, but he thinks his way around problems.

Following this, he started his professional career with the Red Wings, playing 62 games in 2018-19. While he only posted 18 points during this time, there were still positive signs to build upon. While the Detroit Red Wings likely hoped for more, Michael Rasmussen has the toolkit to be a solid bottom-six forward for the franchise.
He played 80 games in 2021-22, and if that continues, he could become a solid bottom-six forward for the franchise. By many accounts Tippet was seen as being the best pure goalscorer available, and as a big-bodied forward coming off a 75-point season in 2016-17, some expected to be taken even higher on draft day. After his selection, TIppet was sent back to the Ontario Hockey League OHL to continue developing his game, which he did by posting dominant 70-plus point seasons in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. However, when taking the ice with Florida, Tippet just never was able to translate his scoring potential. He had great defensive analytics but struggled to post more than a handful of points.
In many ways, this was the right assumption, as the top-ten picks have shown a lot of good but underwhelming players. However, the best players from this class are truly exceptional, as Makar, Heiskanen, and Pettersson will be faces of the league for years to come.

Original Pick: Cal Foote The Lightning desired a defenseman to slide into their top-four with the 14th overall selection. With several blueliners projected to go in the second half of the first round, Al Murray opted for Foote.
The Kelowna Rockets product tallied three more points than Henri Jokiharju in his draft year, but the latter has begun his professional career on a more intriguing note. Original Pick: Erik Brannstrom After losing draft stock in the weeks leading up to the draft, Nolan Patrick maintained his draft value and was selected by the Flyers in the two-hole. Nonetheless, he is currently forecasting as a satisfactory middle-six center, value worthy of a 15th overall pick. Original Pick: Juuso Valimaki Few players recognition has grown as much over the previous twelve months than the Blue Jackets forward Bemstrom.

Keith Petruzzelli the only good pick. Centers Cody Glass and Nick Suzuki were absolute coups in the first round. Erik Brannstrom of Sweden could end up being a Torey Krug type. Their later picks were admirable too. Really strong first class for the Knights. But as the story goes here in Chicago: Vegas wanted Cody Glass. They were prepared to trade up from No. The top four picks were all standing pat.
Benning and the Canucks were at No. One assumes by Vancouver. So he knew Glass would be there at six, and kept his second-rounder.
In his own zone, he is efficient at breaking up play with an active stick. Projected as a second-line centre, Pettersson could end up being one of the best middle-men in the league very soon. His incredible mobility combined with some of the best hands and shot in the league makes him a threat from anywhere on the ice. Whereas Makar usually creates offence rushing full-speed at defenders, Heiskanen is much more subtle. He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target.
He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates. He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic.
He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances.
Out of the top five players selected in this draft, Makar was the only one who played NCAA where he tallied 21 goals and 70 points in 75 games played for the University of Massachusetts. Makar also led his team in scoring as a defenseman in 2018-19 and would go on to win the Hobey Baker award, the first in the history for the school. Makar had a more than unique breakout with the Avs as he was called up to play for the team in the 2018-19 playoffs, where he adapted almost immediately, registering a goal and six points in 10 playoff games, cementing himself undoubtedly into the Avalanche roster for years to come. This season for Colorado, Makar was arguably the top candidate for the Calder Memorial Trophy, having racked up 12 goals and 50 points in just 57 games played. Makar was essentially a human highlight reel in 2019-20. With the fifth pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks were fortunate enough to be able to draft arguably the best of the top 5 in Elias Pettersson.
