She attended Bryn Mawr College and graduated with a degree in English literature. She then enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and studied there for three years. She has won many awards and accolades for her work in theater, film, and television. She attended the prestigious Vassar College where she studied English literature and drama. After graduating, she went on to study at the Actors Studio where she studied with Lee Strasberg.
She was married to screenwriter Garson Kanin from 1990 until his death in 1999.
