The Foundation series takes place thousands of years in the future. Despite presiding over billions and incubating technological achievements of which we today can only dream, this empire is about to collapse. But only one man is confident of this: Hari Seldon. He does all this shortly before his own death, but after recording a series of messages to this elect for posterity, to be released at precise intervals of crises that he predicted. In these messages, he directs his successors on what to do to confront the difficulties he knows they will face. Though Asimov wrote more Foundation novels, the first three books won a Hugo Award an Academy Award equivalent for sci-fi and fantasy in 1966 for best all-time series. The novels do not rise above their serialized origins, with the individual parts of each book so distinct from one another as to seem like separate works crudely collated.
Even his science fiction is usually prefaced by autobiographical essays written in that same friendly voice. Science fiction has changed dramatically in the past decade, with a gratifyingly diverse group of writers reshaping the field. But remember that the titans were overthrown by newer gods — and that those gods themselves were supplanted over time. Readers in 2020 and beyond will have an increasingly difficult time recognizing the future he depicted: a future without personal computers or the internet, and in which no one finds it remarkable that every single scientist, politician and person of importance is a man. Not that I think Asimov is about to fade into obscurity. So Asimov will probably be reentering the conversation soon.

Readers in 2020 and beyond will have an increasingly difficult time recognizing the future he depicted: a future without personal computers or the internet, and in which no one finds it remarkable that every single scientist, politician and person of importance is a man. Not that I think Asimov is about to fade into obscurity. So Asimov will probably be reentering the conversation soon. His best work makes it clear that each generation will need to leave the last one behind, that it must face new problems with new ideas. Despite his very real flaws as a writer and as a person, he encouraged us to search for those better ideas and work for that better future.

Acting almost entirely alone, he destroys the Foundation and establishes his own, new empire.
