She is so inculcated in the Shrekian logic of late capitalism that she cannot bring herself to psychically escape, even when she finds herself physically extracted from it. This zero-calorie irony, this kiddie-friendly pastiche? For all its pastiche and irony, Shrek is the furthest thing from subversive.
It upends established tenets of fairy tales beginning by casting the ogre as the antihero instead of the villain only to end up strengthening them. Shrek disrupts the Prince Charming story only to recertify it, to prolong a narrative it pretends to rebuff. Likewise, Shrek: The Musical asks its presumed hip child viewer to question certain assumptions made by broad traditions of literature and story-telling — is love real?
