And I saw that perhaps a steadier life would be more successful regardless of financial outcome. All those people made a big impact on me, but they were more of the daily life things as opposed to an idea of success. Pulling great performances out of actors is one of his strong suits which he accomplishes simply by creating a comfortable atmosphere on set. He wants it to be a safe, fun place for everyone, and he misses working with a hundred people every day. It comes as no surprise, then, that casting plays a crucial role in his films. He tells me about one of his mentors, casting director Susan Shopmaker, who collaborated with Nancy Meyers on The Holiday, a film Durkin watches every holiday season.
Durkin was working with Shopmaker at the time of filming, and Meyers came to New York to meet with the legendary Eli Wallach. They all met on the Upper West Side, and Durkin was told to bring his camera. I saw people around me chasing an idea of success, which is very much what The Nest is about. And Nancy tells me to videotape him and the apartment behind his back. A director he admires, one of his favorites, just did something that he would never do.
The story is an interesting look into Durkin as a director, as a writer, and as a person.

He makes it look easy as he smoothly plants it in the bag and with position restored he engineers a split. He has to be bold and nails an absolute beauty of a blue up to the green pocket. It feels like a decisive pot but he overruns trying to land on the black and it becomes a tough cut up to the colour. It opens the door for The Pistol who mops up and nicks a cheeky red along the bottom rail.
With the half century break helping him to seal the frame, the heat is off as he takes on the two remaining reds down the left rail. A yellow to its home pocket helps him down towards the pack, but he needs a good recovery with excellent control on the cue ball off the left cushion. A lovely kiss off a red tight to the black while popping away one to right corner frees up the colour. He works hard to whittle down to four reds remaining and a clinical blue that sees him come off three cushions and puts him in prime position to knock in frame ball via the rest to the left corner. Both players work their magic with their safety to somehow avoid leaving that simple red on. A superb three-ball plant to the right corner bag proves to be the highlight of a disappointingly short run of 10 as he soon overruns the cue ball again and has to retreat to baulk.
It enables him to bring the cue ball down to nick in the red above the black and free up the colour on its spot.
And so there was some connection I made there. I just felt connected to them and that loss haunted me. It just stayed with me. We see the sons grapple with the pressures placed upon them in an industry where masculine vulnerability was seen as a weakness. You have to be tough, you have to carry on.
