This incident tragically makes that point. And this is only going to be exacerbated in a country where there are many barriers to mental health treatment; last year it was reported that less than half of Americans with a mental disorder get adequate treatment.
Research also suggests that the broader public typically exaggerates the link between violence and mental illness, and over-estimate their own risk.
He touted a bill he introduced last year intended to give the state more authority to intervene to assist people suffering from mental illness and encouraged the legislature to pass it. We will respond with care, compassion and action.
