Dungeons and Dragons.
Paladin Handbook: DnD 5th Edition Class Guide – RPGBOT
Oath of Devotion This is the most typical version of a Paladin. It provides a mix of abilities that are intuitive and have a good degree of synergy. Protection from Evil and Good is a very strong buff, especially when used to prevent or control possession and charm effects at low levels, when your party is particularly susceptible to them. Guardian of Faith is a very strong area control spell. Commune is tricky to use well.
Channel Divinity: Two useful options that feel very…paladin-y. Sacred Weapon: Granting yourself a magic weapon for a minute is very useful at low levels, but chances are any magic weapons you find over time will outclass this eventually. Turn the Unholy: Adding turning undead and fiends to your list of abilities is useful for dealing with crowds of monsters. Purity of Spirit: Protection from Evil and Good is an amazing defensive buff, and having it permanently running without needing to concentrate is spectacular. This also keeps pesky minions off your back, allowing you to save your weapon attacks for the main villain. Unlike the other Sacred Oaths, this one grants abilities that can most easily be used to prevent or end encounters and promote diplomatic avenues. This sacred oath requires you to max out your Charisma as soon as possible, in order to make the best use of your Charisma-based skills and spellcasting, all of which relies on your targets failing the spell save DC.
Oath Spells: Your spells are all excellent and on theme. Calm emotions is a strong area of effect spell, but only works situationally. They give you great resilience. Wall of force is the best wall spell in the game. Channel Divinity: Both options are easy to use and commonly activated. Rebuke the Violent: Great to use against enemy casters, or big monsters who hit hard. Did they just hurt you?
Make them feel your pain. Aura of the Guardian: Being able to soak up damage lets you tank at short range. In case one of your squishier party members accidentally gets hurt, you can soak it for them. Protective Spirit: This makes Aura of the Guardian safer to use and helps keep you alive. Emissary of Redemption: By being a punching bag, you can take no actions and kill something. Oath of the Ancients Ah, the Nature Paladin. Oath of the Ancients shares a lot of abilities with both Rangers and Druids.
It includes abilities that restrain and hinder movement of enemies, which gives you a great degree of battlefield control. Misty Step is a great spell that solves a lot of mobility problems including pits, difficult terrain, walls, and enemies. Protection From Energy is a mandatory spell for any adventurer going after dragons, elementals, or any higher level caster. Stone Skin is a good buff, but it has an expensive material component. Given that you learn it at 13th-level, many enemies you encounter will have magic attacks. Channel Divinity: Two options that give you decent battlefield control. Aura of Warding: Resistance to spell damage turns you into a safe haven from enemy spellcasters.
You are provided with several abilities to single out foes and taunt them into attacking you over your weaker, more vulnerable allies. Additionally, you are afforded ways to take damage that would otherwise be dealt to your friends and use your large pool of hit points and healing options to soak up damage instead. This gives your healer a more efficient turn, where they only have to heal you with a single spell, rather than taking multiple turns to spread it around. Oath Spells: Crown spells are a mix of useful and useless spells. Some of these spells are going to be used constantly, others are going to be converted into smites. Command is somewhat less useful. Warding Bond is a great way to ensure a squishy character stays alive, shunting damage they would take to you instead.
Zone of Truth is very situational. Spirit Guardians a strong effect, but useless on ranged foes unless you spend your time chasing them around. Guardian of Faith is one of the best area control options available to you. Geas is usually less useful than killing something outright, but plays into your good-alignment sensibilities, and grants you some depth and could ultimately add a fun twist to the plot. Champion Challenge: Taunt effects are rare in 5e, and this one hits a wide area. Turn the Tide: A small amount of AoE healing is great in combination with your Lay on Hands ability, giving you even more utility as a support character. Divine Allegiance: Another way to redirect damage to yourself, giving your healing a single target.
Exalted Champion: Unlike most other Paladin Oath capstone abilities, this one lasts for 1 hour instead of 1 minute. While less overtly powerful offensively, you gain a great defensive buff that extends to your allies, keeping everyone in it until the end, while making your whole team exceptionally difficult to kill. It provides you all the skillsof a great athlete and allows you to excel in combat. This Oath emphasizes your physical attributes while downplaying your spellcasting and diplomatic skills. Peerless Athlete: Activating this as a bonus action is a huge asset, you can pop it before trying to make a shove against an enemy. Inspiring Smite: Healing on demand for yourself and others. The radius increase at 18th level is nice, but again, too little too late.
Glorious Defense: This is a really solid defensive ability. Use a reach weapon, profit. The fact that it only lasts for one minute means you need to use it wisely. Oath of Vengeance This Paladin build is the most offensive, attack-focused style of play, and will maximize the damage you deal while leaving healing and support primarily to the Cleric. It does well in tandem with another melee character to grans flanking bonuses, or a battlefield control caster to funnel enemies towards the pointy end. Dimension Door is just a longer- range Misty Step. Scrying is situational.
Channel Divinity: One bad option and one perfect option make your choice on which to use easy. This is the bad option. Vow of Enmity: Here we go! Starting a boss fight? You have advantage against him. Relentless Avenger: Slower enemies will have a hard time getting away from you. Consider taking Polearm Master to further increase your threat radius and keep chasing them down.
Soul of Vengeance: An extra attack each round against your target of Vow of Enmity greatly increases your damage output.
In addition to their other skills, Paladins start with two special abilities. Divine Sense What is Divine Sense you ask? Likewise, they can also sense powerful good forces nearby. Paladins can use Divine Sense as an action to detect celestial , fiend, or undead beings within 60ft. Paladins have a pool of divine power in them that can be used to heal wounds. The pool can also be used to cure diseases. Your pool will replenish after a long rest.
Leveled up abilities As Paladins advance, they will gain more special abilities. What is the Paladin Sacred Oath? At the 3rd level, Paladins take a Sacred Oath. This commits your character to the holy quest they are on as well as giving them special Oath Spells. There are three Sacred Oaths to choose from in 5e. Each oath has specific tenets, spells, and abilities. Paladins who take the Oath of Devotion are sometimes known as holy warriors or white knights. They are committed to the highest ideals of justice and virtue.
What are the tenets of the Oath of Devotion? The tenets of the Oath of Devotion are rooted in justice, virtue, and order. These are: Honesty: You cannot lie or cheat Courage: You are never too afraid to act Compassion: You help others, show mercy, and protect those who cannot protect themselves Honor: You treat all fairly and do as much good as possible Duty: You feel a strong sense of duty to those you protect and those you follow What are the Oath of Devotion spells? Every few levels, Paladins get new spells based on their oath. At lower levels, you can cast protection from evil and good, sanctuary , lesser restoration , and zone of truth. Other Oath of Devotion abilities The Oath of Devotion offers several other abilities depending on your level. The weapon will also emit a bright light and become magical useful against monsters who only take damage from magical weapons. Turn Undead: Hold up your Holy Symbol and chant a prayer.
Undead enemies who fail a Wisdom saving throw will run away from you for one minute or until hit. Aura of Devotion: At 7th level, you can make yourself and friendly creatures within 10ft of you immune from charm spells. Purity of Spirit: At 15th level, you always receive the effect of the protection from evil and good spell. Holy Spirit: At 20th level, you can emit a radiant light for one minute and 30ft around you, causing 10 radiant damage to enemies within it. Oath of the Ancients The Oath of the Ancients is connected to nature, the Fey, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Paladins who take the Oath of the Ancients do so because they love the world and all living things on it and they are committed to protecting life and beauty. They are often called fey knights, green knights, or horned knights. What are the tenets of the Oath of the Ancients?
These are: Kindle the Light: You always try to kindle a light of hope in the world through mercy and kindness. Shelter the Light: You protect goodness and beauty in the world.

Avenging Angel: Flight for an hour a day is pretty rad. The fear aura will hold lesser foes at bay while you take on the big bad, preventing you from being swarmed. All the abilities are great, but only apply in certain situations. If your campaign setting calls for it, this is one of the strongest paladin subclasses.
However, in a vacuum when compared to the others, it underperforms. Oath Spells: A wide variety of spells that are mostly situational or overlap with other party roles. Ahead of a fight with casters, this is a solid buff, but otherwise it wastes an action you would otherwise use smiting. Abjure the Extraplanar: Situational. Aura of the Sentinel: An initiative boost for entering combat in tight formation. Vigilant Rebuke: Situational. Good against some casters. This Sacred Oath is more important for villainous archetypes than the others and gives an evil-aligned campaign a solid tank option. Oathbreaker paladins are free to pursue dark goals, or accompany some more roguish characters, such as a party of warlocks, bards, and rogues, on adventures.
Oath Spells: Some of the options are bad and will never be used, but there are a few gems on this list. Go from being outnumbered to an overwhelming force in the blink of an eye. As long as you have the materials prepared ahead of time, your reinforcements can arrive when you most need them. Use it to animate a dead body to kill enemies and animate them tomorrow for a never-ending cycle. Confusion is unreliable compared to other single-target enchantment spells like Hold Person, given the randomness of its effect. Touch a target in a crowd and watch them deteriorate before confronting them for the kill. Dominate Person is a powerful way to temporarily gain an extra party member. Control Undead is on theme, but less relevant. Control Undead: Rather than turning undead, you can redirect them.
This only works on minor threats, however, as any serious undead threat is going to be too powerful for you to control. Putting a swath of creatures into a frightened panic in your presence allows your allies to mop them up relatively easily. The damage bonus will stack considerably. Supernatural Resistance: Resistance to nonmagical damage makes you very difficult to kill when facing down minor enemies. Dread Lord: This ability does a ton of damage. Using it in conjunction with your channel divinity will allow you to chase enemies down and cause psychic damage to them, get an extra attack, and also take your normal attack. Animal Handling: Nature paladins and those who engage in mounted combat should grab this skill when available. Arcana: Divine casters usually take Religion over Arcana. Athletics: Strength is one of your main stats.
Deception: Paladins are straight-talking Lawful Good guys, but they do have Charisma as a main stat… History: Not terribly important Insight: The one Wisdom skill you should concern yourself with. Intimidation: Another great Charisma skill for you. Investigation: Not your strong suit. Perception: Spot enemies sneaking up on you. Performance: Not your job. Persuasion: This is your most important skill. Sweet talk your way out of or into anywhere. Stealth: Not another Dexterity skill… Survival: Nature paladins only. Backgrounds Acolyte: Thematically this might make sense, as you get two skills off the paladin skill list, but neither are very useful given your ability score priorities.
Versatile, but not ideal. Criminals are evil. Entertainer: bad skills for a heavily armored tank. Faction AgentSCAG: A fantastic choice, given the versatility in skill selection, and two bonus languages along with 15 GP, which happens to be the most of any background. Though they do make you more balanced.
Always useful, especially if your Constitution score is currently sitting at an odd number. War Caster. Advantage on concentration checks, ability to use somatic components of spells while your hands are full, and the ability to cast some spells as an opportunity attack. Some of these feats are better than others, depending on your character build. Ensnaring Strike and Speak with Animals spells and the ability to restrain creatures with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Moonbeam and Misty Step spells at 5th level and an aura that grants spell resistance to nearby allies at 7th level. This nature-themed subclass leans into the control aspect of the Paladin, adding multiple methods for restraining enemies. Misty Step is also useful on just about every character in DnD. Overall, a solid subclass with an easy-to-parse set of tenets. Protection from Evil and Good and Sanctuary spells and the ability to add damage and a light effect to your weapon with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Lesser Restoration and Zone of Truth spells at 5th level and an aura that protects against charm at 7th level. This is a balanced Paladin archetype that focuses somewhat on damage and utility. Paladins already have access to the Protection and Truth spells, and the other bonus spells are okay. Protecting against charm can be big against a spell like Hypnotic Pattern , but this aura is definitely on the weaker side. Hold Person and Misty Step spells at 5th level and the ability to instantly chase an enemy after hitting them with an opportunity attack. This subclass is all about control, mobility, and pursuit. Misty Step is great, and Hold Person sets you up for big damage critical strikes. The chase effect is situationally nice, but this subclass does miss out on the utility of a party-wide aura. Oathbreaker DMG. Hellish Rebuke and Inflict Wounds spells and the ability to control undead creatures with Channel Divinity at the 3rd level. Crown of Madness and Darkness spells at 5th level and an aura that causes nearby fiends and undead to take extra damage at 7th level. Controlling undead creatures can be cool, but unless your campaign features a lot of them, this subclass is ultimately one of the weaker ones. Conquest XGtE. Armor of Agathys and Command spells and the ability to frighten creatures in a large area with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. This subclass is all about controlling big crowds of enemies. All four low-level spells that Conquest Paladins get are great and useful to have prepared at all times. Redemption XGtE.
Spellcasting 4 — The Paladin is a half caster, which means their magic is more to support their primary role as a martial, rather than to act as a dedicated spellcaster. It is possible to build a Paladin who revolves around support, but spells play only part of this role. This feature is enhanced by your subclass, which gives additional spells prepared you may not have access to otherwise. Only rated as a 4 because of how variable its effectiveness is; if you have a high Charisma modifier, and get a good selection of spells from your subclass, this can easily be a 5. We will go through some recommended Paladin spells later in the guide. The additional damage die against undead and fiends makes the Paladin particularly effective in certain combats, and Divine Smite is one of the best burst damage abilities in the game. Divine Health 4 — A ribbon ability, but it comes at the same level as your subclass which makes it a nice bonus. This would be a 5 if it was an active ability or more universally applicable. Extra Attack 5 — The essential increase for every martial, well except the Rogue, this is especially nice for a Paladin as it gives more opportunities to smite either Divine or spell-based. Aura of Protection 5 — A superb feature, not only is this a significant defensive boost for yourself, but the whole party can benefit. Even with a lower Cha modifier, this can be the difference between your party failing some nasty saves which can lead to a TPK, or being victorious. The higher your Charisma the better this is, but even with a middling modifier this is still a great ability. Aura of Courage 4 — Frightened is a fairly common monster-imposed condition, so being immune to it, whilst making your party immune is very nice. Improved Divine Smite 5 — Not only a substantial damage increase, being able to do radiant damage every hit can come in handy against certain creatures, like vampires and zombies. Note: This does not apply to unarmed strikes unless you are making them with natural weapons. Cleansing Touch 2 — Whilst this ability could prove crucial in saving yourself of a party member, an action is a significant cost for most Paladins and there are far too many creatures who can impose effects independent of spellcasting. Aura Improvements 4 — Your auras will now likely cover your entire party for most combats, unless your party likes to really spread out of course. This is a significant defensive buff, however, at this level it feels a little lacking as the only feature. Some styles may be rated differently here than they were in the Fighter 5E guide, this is because the opportunity cost for a Paladin taking a Fighting Style is lower, as their available styles are far fewer. Dueling 5 — A great damage boost to one-handed weapons that scales with the number of attacks you get. Best for shield users and Dex based Paladins; better than using two hands with a longsword for Str based Paladins. Great Weapon Fighting 2 — If you reroll when you roll under the average damage for your chosen great weapon, this can be a damage boost. Keep in mind the attack may still hit, even with disadvantage. If you were already looking to play a shield-using Paladin, and have some party members willing to fight shoulder to shoulder, this can be a good tanking choice. TCoE Blessed Warrior 4 — If you want to play less of a martial Paladin, or are just looking for some more casting support, this is a great style. Stand-out choices include Guidance and Toll the Dead , of course the higher your Charisma the better for the latter. Blind Fighting 3 — This style does bring something to the Paladin they would have a hard time getting otherwise, blindsight, but its usefulness is pretty niche. This warrants a 3 because it is something your party can build around, such as making use of Darkness and Fog Cloud. Interception 4 — Unlike Protection, this will always help your ally. The additional Fighting Styles have already been covered above, and we will go through the remaining optional features in this section. Harness Divine Power 5 — This is a fantastic ability, making your Paladin more efficient and opening up your options. This is nice to have for some tables, and fairly redundant for others. The exact spread of stats you want depends on your build and personal priorities: some will want to max out both their attack stat and their Cha; others will be focused on being an effective martial and would be happy to leave their Cha lower; whilst some might have a middling attack stat and focus on Charisma to play a support role. You should consider your stats and priorities when you allocate your ability scores and choose a race at first level. Moreover, if you see your paladin as a warrior first you should ideally start with a 16 and advance it as quickly as you can. If you want to include feats from ASIs, try to get your Str to 18 first as this will help maintain your martial performance and consistency. However, if you choose to use light armor instead of medium armor, you will be more dependent on this stat for AC than your counterparts would be dependent on Str for theirs. Generally speaking, Dexadins gain a lot of benefits from their primary stat, such as high initiative and better Dex saves and skills, at the expense of one point lower AC and not using heavy or versatile weapons. Even if you focus on Str, having some degree of Dex is recommended for those benefits. Constitution 3 — This is a very nice stat to have as high as possible. The hit points will help with tanking and being in melee, and the higher chance to maintain concentration on your spells is very useful. However, being a MAD class means you likely cannot afford a particularly high score here, try and aim for no less than a 14, ideally a 16. Wisdom 3 — A good tertiary stat to have, if you think you may want to multiclass into a Wis requiring class then try to have at least a 14, otherwise whatever you can afford to put here is a good choice. Charisma 5 — Cha is a great stat to have, it ties to many of your class features and will make you a more effective Paladin. Even if you dump it to 8, a lot of abilities have a minimum of one use clause in them and other key features like Divine Smite and Lay on Hands have no interaction with Cha at all. I recommend putting at least a 16 here, but you are by no means a bad Paladin if you decide otherwise. On the other hand, I would say Paladins are one of the more heavily affected classes in terms of role play, with the Oaths and the tenets that they present acting as a strong base to ground your character in, should you choose to do so. In our Paladin DnD 5E guide, we suggest that unless there is a particular spell or CD that is important for your build or really interests you, I would recommend choosing an Oath which resonates most with your character. There is an additional Oath option, the Oathbreaker, which will not be covered here as it is a DM-facing subclass, primarily intended for NPCs. Channel Divinity options will be denoted by [CD]. Devotion The more stereotypical of the Paladin Oaths , Devotion is driven by justice, virtue, and order, in true knight in shining armor fashion. Their abilities and spells are geared towards fighting the stereotypical enemy of Paladins: fiends, undead, and aberrations but they are also effective against other foes. In practice, losing your first action of a fight is a very steep cost. This gets a 3 for helping you overcome resistance or immunity to non-magical BPS, and the potential it has in longer combats.

At higher levels, this paladin can move with opportunity attacks and, at their highest level, are able to fly. Now, players will be able to infuse elemental magic into their animal form, allowing them to become creatures such as fire-infused wolf or lightning-infused owl. Additionally, in this new form they will now deal damage of that elemental type. For example, a fire wolf might shoot flames out of its mouth. Circle of the Moon Druids will also now be able to wildshape as a bonus action, and while in their wildshape form can now cast Adjuration spells or burn a spell slot to heal themselves. Additionally, Paladins will not have access to two Channel Divinity uses per day, with this number increasing as the character levels up.
The ability, however, can now only be used once per turn and only if the Paladin has not already cast a spell.
Their ability scores and modifiers are not optimal, but they are more than passable. However, dwarves are much better as clerics, like the life domain cleric. What makes dwarves an excellent race for paladins in 5e DnD is that they are more interested in good order and the rule of law than other races on this list. Honor and oaths are significant in dwarven society, and grudges can be carried for centuries or even millennia. Next to that ability score increase, you also get a lot of interesting racial features like Dwarven Resilience advantage throw against poison and Darkvision. The main thing they have going for them is that they have a very easy backstory to work with. In addition, the Aasimar gets ability scores that can benefit paladins. A couple of interesting racial abilities and feats are a boost.
Radiant Strikes now work on both melee weapons and Unarmed Strikes. Restoring Touch has been moved to a 14th-level class feature. Divine Conduit has been removed from the class features, with Aura Expansion returning at 18th-level. These changes are as follows Oath of Devotion: With the changes to Smites, some spells and revisions have happened to the Oath of Devotions spell list, and it is now as follows: 3rd — Protection from Evil and Good, Shield of Faith 5th — Aid, Zone of Truth 9th — Beacon of Hope, Dispel Magic 13th — Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Faith 17th — Commune, Flame Strike Smite of Protection has also been moved to 15th-level and works with all Smite spells, and provides Half Cover to every player in range of your Aura of Protection until the start of your next turn. The Peerless Athlete Feature now lasts one hour instead of ten minutes. Lastly, Aura of Alacrity will now enhance Aura of Protection and provide a greater range for the feature than in previous versions. Aura of Warding will now enhance the Aura of Protection, providing resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage. Finally, the Elder Champion is now a Bonus Action, and its benefits apply to all your spells, and you can restore a use of this feature by expending a 5th-level spell slot.

DnD 5.
Paladin 5e spells Although most at home in the thick of battle, swinging a greatsword and relying on thick plate armor to glance incoming blows, Paladins have a powerful spell list open to them. The rapid growth of spell slots that Paladins gain as they level makes them formidable defensive spellcasters, that can challenge the utility of any half-baked Cleric. When picking spells, bear two things in mind: Concentration and Charisma. Your Cha modifier dictates how many spells you may prepare after each long rest and, in several cases, their effectiveness. As for picking spells, Paladins have it easy. Use this freedom to experiment with the many options available, and test out creative combinations. Find Steed Level: Two Summon a loyal animal to fight by your side, whether a horse, mastiff, camel, or anything else you can wrangle out of your DM. Anything you summon will stick around until it drops to zero HP. Revivify Level: Three A classic.
Destructive Wave Level: Five Create a burst of divine energy that deals 5d6 damage, plus 5d6 radiant or necrotic damage, to every creature 30 feet in front of you that fails on a Con saving throw. Its potential to impair whole swathes of enemies is remarkable in itself, but particularly useful for Paladins that struggle with area-of-effect attacks. These are the worst Paladin spells, which are best avoided: Purify Food and Drink Level: One Remove poison and disease from any non-magical drink or foodstuff. Prepare this if you know a dark dungeon lies ahead. Otherwise, leave it alone. Dragonborn two-hander tank A classic build that offers all the Paladin quirks in a simple but effective package. Become the tank of your party, soaking up hits, protecting squishier companions, and taking the Oath of the Crown to gain a generous slew of party buffs and defensive abilities.
They called on a group of human warriors called the Red Dragons. Zaela, serving as a Lord Marshall, led the army into battle with Gulo. That battle was the bloodiest and most difficult battle Zaela had ever been involved in. Gulo had been ready for them, however. The attack lasted for days with both sides watching their comrades fall by their side. However, at last the leaders of the Red Dragon forces thought they had figured out a plan that would work. They used a magic potion that could make them invisible, but this meant they would not be able to see each other or Gulo in order for it to work. That was accomplished by using ropes. As they prepared their attack, two leaders of the Red Dragons covered themselves with shields painted with pictures to see each other by reflection. Available as an eBook or in a classic print format. He got so angry that he breathed fire at them. The swordsmen defended themselves using their shields, and most of them died in the attack, but they had done it! Gulo was tied up! Another group of Red Dragons then entered his mouth and cut off his great golden tongue. The Redians were rewarded by the king. The queen was very thankful for the death of her nemesis. She offered Zaela and her clerics a permanent place in Yorebridge Castle if she ever needed a safe place to stay. With the death of Gulo, peace in the land has once again been established. But more than once, someone has thought of reviving the great dragon Gulo from his sleep beneath Yorebridge Castle. Some think it is just a rumor, while others are sure that someone is trying to recreate one of the most powerful dragons in history! It will be up to Hunter and Zaela to stop these people before they destroy the world all over again! Personality: Xanthe is an idealist. She is determined to protect the weak and weak of heart. She will always try to do the right thing and see the good in others— even when it seems impossible. Her ambition is to travel around the world and do good wherever she goes. Appearance: Xanthe is a tall, thin halfling with dark green hair. She is very muscular from years of training and fighting. Her striking, blue eyes make her appear even taller.

In this Paladin DnD 5E guide, we’ll train you on your options as a Paladin, as well as supportive choices you can make to build your character to achieve what you want. The Ultimate D&D 5E Paladin Class Guide (2024)
This magic resistance is excellent to help you tank when you are fighting on the frontlines, and your enemies have spells like fear, stun, paralyze, levitate , and so on. Because Satyrs have extra movement, they can quickly close the gap with your enemies when you unleash your smiths upon them. Best Race for paladin conclusion If you want to choose the best Race for a paladin in 5e DnD, you have many options, all content for that title. In my opinion, the Variant Human is the best choice for a mighty paladin. You get the ability stats you need, you get a feat, and you have a lot of lore to work with for your background. Other options that are a lot of fun to play with are the Goliath and the Half-Orc.
These races make great Paladins that rely on Strength. While they have little lore for you to work with, your background story can be unique.
They formed the Order of the White Shield, with Ayla as the paladin of justice and her new friend, Yashin as the warrior. Together they fight to keep those who are weaker than themselves safe. Personality: Ayla is very courageous, if a bit naive. She believed her father has the ability to do everything. She views him as being perfect. Her own hero is Marcus, the king of Grabisco. She constantly looks up to him and strives to protect the innocent in his name. Appearance: Ayla wears a silver chainmail.
Her dark hair is braided, with a bit of it hanging over her shoulder. Her weapon is a long battle-axe. They intend to seek an audience with King Marcus about the threat surrounding his kingdom. He grew up in a very traditional home, never questioning his parents. He learned the ways of a warrior from a very young age. Kratos was trained in how to use a variety of weapons and armors. He spent many of his days hunting and protecting the borders of his homeland, but he always longed to wander the world for new adventures. And now, that time has come. Personality: Kratos is very goal-oriented. He is a loyal friend who will always come to the rescue when needed.
He has dark red fur with dark green eyes. He is always wearing armor of brown, red, and gold. He wields a halberd, able to fight with both his weapon and his shield. Start of Character: Kratos knows that he must head to the kingdom of Grabisco to return the missing piece of the legendary Cosmic Forge to its rightful place. She was a curious young girl full of questions, and she started studying blacksmithing and weapon combat at an early age. All of the children in her village played together, dreaming of becoming great warriors, monsters, and heroes. Elyssa dreamed of becoming a paladin of the law; this was not for any particular reason other than her being a child who wanted to serve what she perceived to be the greater good. She and the other children formed a militia that they eventually used to defend the villagers and their community. Over the years, Elyssa became a skilled combatant, but she also studied diplomacy and negotiation with the natives of Fallowweed. Personality: Elyssa has a strong sense of duty and justice that she strives to uphold in herself and others.
Ancients Paladin meets Druid, this Oath is focused more on the principle of good overall, rather than law or chaos, and does so with a nature theme. The features and spells continue a theme of nature magic, combined with protection against fey and fiends, and enhancing the survivability of the Paladin. This subclass is often talked about because of its aura that gives resistance to spell damage.
Aura of Warding 3 — A fantastic aura… if it applies to you, that is. Great for certain adventures, but too powerful to rate only a 2. The added ribbon of not feeling your age, or being vulnerable to magical aging is nice flavor added on.
Elder Champion 5 — An excellent capstone ability worth the action cost. Excellent to pair with Ensnaring Strike, the disadvantage on the saving throw can be easily converted into advantage on your attacks, and additional damage. Vengeance If vengeance stories motivate you, the idea of chasing down the monsters who wronged the innocent stirs your righteous heart then this is the subclass for you.
The mechanics support an aggressive playstyle with access to teleportation spells which give you the capability to pursue or your quarry or form a tactical retreat when necessary. Abjure Enemy [CD] 2 — Frightened with a speed of zero is a very nice debuff, and the increased potency against fiends and undead makes this a more effective feature even for lower Charisma Paladins. Though, the effect disappearing when the creature takes damage completely undermines all of those benefits, especially when it took your entire action to set up.
This can still be helpful but is not a go-to use of your Channel Divinity by any means. Vow of Enmity [CD] 5 — A fantastic buff against bosses and other meaty single targets. Not only can this help land more smites, but can also aid if you went the route of using Great Weapon Master.
Relentless Avenger 2 — A feature that can be useful for chasing down your quarry, but an enemy running away from you whilst provoking an opportunity attack is a bit too niche of a trigger. Soul of Vengeance 4 — A significant improvement to your Vow of Enmity that will increase your damage output drastically, remember the reaction attack will have advantage. Avenging Angel 3 — This is okay overall, the mobility of having a 60ft fly speed is a significant increase to the Paladin, and the fear aura has potential.
Crown Driven by their ideals of civilization, Crown Paladins are guided by the law, their loyalty to whichever form of civilization they have chosen, such as a nation or sovereign, and the belief of being responsible for your actions. Their mechanics are that of a tank Paladin, gaining access to spells and features to protect others or make themselves the center of hostile attention instead. This subclass is often forgotten about, as it was published in the SCAG but not later republished like other subclasses from the same book.
Champion Challenge [CD] 5 — A great tanking ability and one of the few abilities in the game that forces enemies to pay attention to you, rather than the squishy spellcasters 35 feet behind you. Turn the Tide [CD] 3 — This ability has a lot of potential and is potentially a lot of hit points. The stand-out spell here is Spirit Guardians, which would synergize well with Champion Challenge, this is the only Paladin to gain access to this great spell.
I would have preferred to see a little more healing on the list, this is the perfect Paladin for Healing Word. Divine Allegiance 2 — If you build your Paladin with soaking up large amounts of damage in mind, this can be very useful to keep your party members alive. However, the inability to reduce the damage, and the 5ft limit of the feature means you would likely be better off using the Interception style for the most part.
Unyielding Spirit 2 — Advantage against paralysis and being stunned is nice, but very niche to be the only feature at this late a level. The advantage on Wisdom saving throws is also a large defensive boost at this level, where Wisdom saves are pretty common and the effects of failing them particularly unpleasant. The stand-out here is that this ability lasts for an entire hour, rather than the much shorter duration of other Oath capstones, allowing you to fit potentially several encounters into a single use.
Conquest A very different take on the Paladin archetype, being devoted to crushing all who stand before you and amassing personal power, the mechanics and spells are based around inducing and extorting fear in your enemies. Between the focus on causing the frightened condition and their aura, Conquest Paladins have a reputation of being great battlefield control Paladins. Conquering Presence [CD] 5 — A great debuff with no chance of friendly fire and no risk of removing the effect by damaging the creatures affected.
Guided Strike [CD] 3 — Being able to make a big miss a hit is very nice, however, a single hit on a class with Extra Attack is a very expensive use of your Channel Divinity. Nice to have in your back pocket to pull off a smite when you need to, but it makes far more sense on the War Cleric, which makes fewer attacks and gets more uses of their CD. Oath Spells 5 — The overall theme of the list is very appropriate for the subclass, with a useful selection.
Aura of Conquest 5 — This aura ties to your CD and spell options, giving the subclass a very cohesive feel, the effect of the aura itself is also very powerful. Being able to lock down a frightened creature, and automatically doing damage to them, is a quick path to victory. This feature benefits from gaining as many ways to impose the frightened condition as possible and having a higher save DC against that condition.
Scornful Rebuke 5 — Automatic damage, of a good type, whenever someone hits you? What pushes this ability into a 5 is this working at range and both with weapons and spells. Redemption A more social and reactive Paladin, the Oath of Redemption focuses on avoiding conflict or mitigating its consequences.
This is executed through spells like Sleep , Calm Emotions, and Hypnotic Pattern, as well as Persuasion buffing, and punitive options for Channel Divinity. This subclass makes a strong candidate for the Charisma-focused, support Paladin playstyle. Emissary of Peace [CD] 4 — A social ability is nice to see on a martial, a duration of 10 minutes makes it useful for entire social encounters.
To get the most out of this ability you really need proficiency in Persuasion and a decent Cha modifier. Rebuke the Violent [CD] 5 — As enemy damage increases, this option will naturally scale in usefulness. Oath Spells 3 — Whilst the spells are very appropriate for the subclass, they run into problems of usefulness and scaling.
That said having these spells as options is nice, and Hypnotic Pattern and Wall of Force are very useful control spells. Aura of the Guardian 2 — A slightly better version of the 7th level Oath of the Crown feature. Protective Spirit 4 — This is a very healthy amount of hp regeneration with some minor scaling built-in for the remaining levels.
Note: As it is not stated, when you halve your Paladin level for this feature, you should round down. Emissary of Redemption 3 — Unfortunately, this is a mixed bag, whilst it fulfills the goal of the subclass and provides great benefits, using a lot of your core class features would negate this benefit entirely. This is best for support Paladins who focus on buffs and healing, or who are content with dealing with minions whilst other party members deal with the heavy-hitting enemies.
The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is a celestial, good aligned dragon or a fey, to a maximum of 6d8. By 3rd level, the unholy magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease. Ability Score Improvement[ edit ] When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. Extra Attack[ edit ] Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Aura of Vulnerability[ edit ] Starting at 6th level, whenever a hostile creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a penalty to the saving throw equal to your Charisma modifier with a minimum penalty of -1.
You must be conscious to grant this penalty. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 45 feet. Aura of Cowardice[ edit ] Starting at 10th level, hostile creatures that start their turns within 10 feet of you have disadvantage on their saving throws against the frightened condition, and creatures immune to this condition lose their immunity while inside the aura. Improved Unholy Smite[ edit ] By 11th level, you are so imbued with profane power that all your melee weapon strikes carry negative energy with them. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d10 necrotic damage.
Corrupted Touch[ edit ] When a creature is under the effect of a spell that requires saving throw in each of its turns, you can use your action to touch that creature. Doing so causes the next saving throw made by that creature to instantly fail. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier a minimum of once. You regain expended uses when you finish a long rest.
