This means the spell slot gain is the same with a level of Artificer as it would be with a level of Cleric, Wizard, etc. If you take this class to third level, Armorer, specifically the Guardian form, is recommended for the temporary HP and Thunder Gauntlets. Barbarian 4 — Excellent for those looking to make a durable Paladin or a grappling Paladin, the small damage boost is a nice bump, but minor overall.

The subclass you choose is important here and should be dictated by what role you are trying to strengthen; a dip into Life Cleric will make you a very potent healer when combined with Lay on Hands, choosing the War Domain can allow you to do more nova damage with bonus action attacks, and the Forge Domain allows you to create your own magic weapon.
The viability of this multiclass is entirely dependent on your ability scores and your priorities, depending on your build this can be very valuable. Druid 2 — This is only worth it if you already have the necessary Wisdom and there are Druid-specific spells that really interest you. Recommended subclasses are Circle of Dreams for access to bonus action healing, and Circle of Stars for a variety of benefits including Guidance, a bonus to healing, or an easier time maintaining concentration. Fighter 5 — With synergistic multiclassing requirements, and goodies at every level which actively enhance the core martial identity of the Paladin. The hard thing here is to stop yourself from taking more levels with how packed full of features the Fighter levels are. Importantly the Fighter adds more short rest resources to the Paladin, improving their endurance on longer, or harder, adventuring days.
Recommended subclasses include the Battle Master for versatility and added damage, for example using Trip Attack to add more damage on your first attack and potentially advantage on your subsequent attack, and Samurai which can give you advantage at will three times per long rest, allowing you to increase your chances of hitting and getting critical hits for smiting. Monk 1 — Incredibly MAD, requiring four stats of 13 or higher, this multiclass is hampered further by the Monk relying on their Ki pool and multiple features not functioning in armor. This is because all of these subclasses have abilities that are not reliant on spending Ki, allowing you to save your few Ki points for Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, or Step of the Wind as you see fit. Ranger 1 — Avoid unless you really want to mix these two classes for roleplay purposes, this combination has the same MADness at the Monk, whilst giving you little benefit. The result of this is requiring at least two levels, primarily gaining a second FIghting Style and Ranger spells. If you do choose to go for a Ranger subclass Gloom Stalker is highly recommended for the additional attack on the first round of every combat, as well as a slew of other benefits.
Rogue 3 — Best for Dexadins and Strength-based Paladins who either use two weapons or a shield, as they are incentivized to use finesse weapons for their own reasons. If you choose to gain a Rogue subclass, Swashbuckler has a lot of synergy with your Charisma and enables you to be an effective skirmisher without needing to rely on Cunning Action to Disengage. Like the Bard, Sorcerer synergizes well with your Charisma spellcasting, unlike the Bard it provides a subclass at first level and access to spells like Shield and Magic Missile to strengthen your defenses and cover your ranged weakness. Taking Sorcerer levels is a rewarding process, with something for you at each level, much like Fighter the hard part here is getting yourself to stop as the Sorcery Points and spell slots mount up.
Another great choice is the Clockwork Soul subclass, which gives you the ability to cancel out advantage or disadvantage, an ability that scales with your proficiency bonus , a nice touch for a multiclassed character. Two levels will give the ability to create an additional 1st level spell slot once per long rest, and three levels will give you access to Metamagic, allowing you to do things like cast a spell as a bonus action. Warlock 5 — Similar to the Sorcerer this combination has a catchy name, the Pallock or Padlock, with a focus on the short rest spell slots which the Warlock provides fueling Divine Smite for the most part. Being a Charisma spellcaster with a subclass at first level makes Warlock a very potent dip, with Invocations adding a lot of potential to a Paladin. Wizard 2 — The small Hit Die and requirement of Intelligence are difficult to overcome, but if Wizard suits your character concept there is some value to be had here. The faster spell slot progression and Arcane Recovery make you a Divine Smite machine, whilst access to defensive spells like Shield and Absorb Elements is welcome on every character.

Consider the nature-themed Oath that gives you bonuses against Fey creatures.
The Oath of the Ancients sees you protected from Magic damage from spells along with some great defensive utility options. If your campaign sees you fighting mages or wandering through the Feywild then this could be a strong choice. Not off to a strong start, using your action to restrainin is nice but the range is short. Turn the Faithless: Lv. Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools. Aura of Warding: Lv.
Cuts all damage from spells against you and allies in your aura in half! Undying Sentinel: Lv. Elder Champion: Lv. Become the avatar of the forest and regain some health every turn. Takes the action to cast Elder champion, but with forewarning you may be able to trigger it before battle. The Oath of Vengeance is all about dishing out incredible damage to one target at a time. Find the biggest, baddest target you can find, sear Vengeance upon them and go to town. Abjure Enemy: Lv.
Target a creature and tell it to wait right there. Vow of Enmity: Lv. Get close to the biggest bad and utter your Vow as a bonus aciton. This power gives you advantage against this creature for a full minute. This power, activated as a bonus action, gives you advantage no ifs ands or buts , against the enemy you target. Later features key of this incredibly well also. All of your Oath spells reinforce your ability to inflict incredible damage on one target. Either by incapacitating your target so you can get close or holding one enemy off so you can focus your Enmity target.
Relentless Avenger: Lv. A great tool to pursue and get in front of a fleeing enemy so that they must move past you again. Potentially useful with Sentinel and Polearm Master. Soul of Vengeance: Lv. Any time your Vow of Enmity target makes an attack you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against it. Avenging Angel: Lv. The Vengeance capstone; for 1 hour you gain 60 ft. The flight speed for 1 hour is great, but somewhat late.
The Aura of Menace makes every creature that starts or enters the 30ft aura make a Wisdom save or be frightened for 1 minute. Float into a room and fill everything with dread. A lot of your kit lets you direct damage and attacks to yourself so that your allies can get stuff done. Champion Challenge: Lv. You can prevent melee enemies attacking allies by standing apart, the problem then comes from allies wanting to be close for your aura. Turn the Tide: Lv. Fair to have on hand for emergencies, if nothing else. All but two of these are already on the Paladin spell list, however: Spirit Guardians, and Warding Bond are fantastic spells to boost the power you have.
And it should be noted that even the redundant Paladin spells on this Oath list are still at least good or even great spells e.

Pretty neat ability, if not quite a flat-out game changer. Aura Improvements 18th Level : All those lovely Auras you get Protection, Courage, anything from your Oath expand from 10 feet to 30 feet. Strength is the best for a two-handed attacker, both are viable for dual wielding and sword-and-board fighting styles. Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later. Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack. They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep. Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one. Get a head start on your character concept with a feat! The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal. Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag.. Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility. Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception. The Cha boost helps a bit too. Aside from that, swim speed, breathe water and air, talk to water creatures, and cold resistance. Good all around. Also gets Darkvision, free Stealth proficiency and 2d6 extra damage when attacking from surprise. The Int may be less useful for you though. The Saving-Face ability is great in a big party. The bonus action movement helps with getting into melee range which can sometimes be an issue, darkvision and intimidation are solid pickups. Magic resistance and poison immunity plus darkvision. A well rounded choice for any Paladin. DEX Paladins could see some real benefits here. Not bad. Heavily armored Paladins can use the Strength bonus. Disguising yourself is a nice trick in more social campaigns. Change your Armour composition during a long rest, resistance to poison and immunity to disease. Navigational skills never hurt anyone either. Also think of the fun creature your Find Steed will create and get more Horns in your arsenal. At lower levels though, the difference is much more noticeable. It is less forgiving, and getting dropped is really, really easy. Keep that in mind when looking at races. To the tainted we bring fire. Your main enemy apart from undead will be fiends and eventually any non natural plane creatures. Sacred Weapon: Lv.
