Periapt of Proof Against Poison DMG : Poison damage is very common across the full level range, so immunity to it is a significant improvement in your durability. Ring of Spell Storing DMG : Fill it with Absorb Elements and Shield and recharge it whenever possible and this is a spectacular defensive asset on almost any character. Radiant damage is great, but most creatures with resistance to weapon damage types are affected normally by magic weapons so the benefits of radiant damage compared to piercing or slashing damage from a magical we oapon are minor. Animated Shield DMG : Tempting for anyone not fighting with a one-handed weapon, but a Cloak of Protection is two rarities lower, works persistently, and arguably provides a better numeric bonus. If you plan to get full plate, get Dwarven Plate instead. For a Strength-based character, raising your Strength above 20 is a massive benefit, and going up as high as 25 is spectacular. Invoking the rune on Bloodshed Blade lets you perform a once-per-day nuke which should nicely eliminate whatever thing to drop all of your hit dice on top of. Yes, you get resistance to fire damage, but you can get that from dozens of other sources by this level. Scimitar of Speed DMG : Among the best weapons to use with the Dueling style, you get two-weapon fighting action economy on a single weapon. Increasing your Strength or Dexterity may be more important, but if you can get both you absolutely should. At high enough level that you might have this item there will definitely be enemies with access to magic attacks spellcasters, magic weapons, natural weapons which count as magical, etc. It feels underwhelming at this rarity, but the math is good. Note that this is just the invisible condition, not the spell have Invisibility, so you can still attack or whatever while invisible. Otherwise, this is a really fun item, and if it provided Advantage on saves against area of effect spells it would shoot straight up to blue. Ring of Three Wishes DMG : Use this to do one of the things that risks permanently removing the ability to cast Wish, such as granting 10 creatures permanent resistance to once damage type. If you lose the ability to cast Wish, pass this off to another ally who will never be able to cast Wish by any other means. Repeat until the last charge is used. For more help with Wish, see my Practical Guide to Wish. Rod of Lordly Might DMG : Allows you to easily change your weapon damage type, and provides three powerful offensive abilities which work in a variety of situations. You may also be able to weaponize the on-touch damage, but I think the intent is that the creature needs to willingly touch or try to pick up the talisman rather than being struck with it. Yet his eyes, a reptilian, slitted green, seem entirely incapable of embracing malice, an observation that is reinforced by the holy emblem displayed prominently on his burnished shield. If you need a functional build with nothing fancy or complicated, this is a great place to start.
Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons. Con: Another top tier stat. Hit points are just too important to let slide. Paladins are melee combatants, and more hit points lets them stay in combat for longer and recover more HP with hit dice. If you plan on casting Concentration spells in the middle of combat, you want a decent score here to maintain them when taking damage. It helps that the Paladin is proficient in Wisdom saves. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later. Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack. They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep. Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one. Get a head start on your character concept with a feat! The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal. Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag.. Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility. Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception. The Cha boost helps a bit too. Aside from that, swim speed, breathe water and air, talk to water creatures, and cold resistance. Good all around. Also gets Darkvision, free Stealth proficiency and 2d6 extra damage when attacking from surprise. The Int may be less useful for you though. The Saving-Face ability is great in a big party. The bonus action movement helps with getting into melee range which can sometimes be an issue, darkvision and intimidation are solid pickups. Magic resistance and poison immunity plus darkvision. A well rounded choice for any Paladin. DEX Paladins could see some real benefits here. Not bad. Heavily armored Paladins can use the Strength bonus. Disguising yourself is a nice trick in more social campaigns. Change your Armour composition during a long rest, resistance to poison and immunity to disease. Navigational skills never hurt anyone either. Also think of the fun creature your Find Steed will create and get more Horns in your arsenal. At lower levels though, the difference is much more noticeable. It is less forgiving, and getting dropped is really, really easy. Keep that in mind when looking at races. To the tainted we bring fire. Your main enemy apart from undead will be fiends and eventually any non natural plane creatures. Sacred Weapon: Lv. An action to add your CHA-modifier to attack rolls for a minute 10 rounds. Does not require Concentration to maintain thus stacks with any other buffs and does not count as a spell which means you can cast a swift spell in the same round. A very good ability for that climactic fight during that part of the day.
As spellcasters, they meditate, draw on divine inspiration, and use their Charisma to use the same spells as Clerics. How to create a Paladin The first step in creating a Paladin in 5e is to figure out what their holy mission is. Is she a virtuous warrior of light, determined to defend the weak and destroy evil wherever she goes? Or is he a religious fanatic who will act according to his sacred laws no matter the consequence? Most Paladins worship one or more deities. But you could also invent your own. If you want to play a Paladin in 5e, Strength and Charisma should be your highest stats. It also helps if you have a high Constitution. Paladin characteristics How many hit points do Paladins get? At 1st level, your Paladin will get 10 hit points plus their Constitution modifier. What armor can Paladins wear? Paladins can wear any armor and can carry shields. What weapons can Paladins use? Paladins can use simple weapons clubs and maces and martial weapons swords and axes. Paladins are best using melee weapons. Paladins can use ranged weapons, but it is not recommended. What saving throws are Paladins proficient in? Wisdom and Charisma. What skills do Paladins have? Divine Sense What is Divine Sense you ask? Likewise, they can also sense powerful good forces nearby. Paladins can use Divine Sense as an action to detect celestial , fiend, or undead beings within 60ft. Paladins have a pool of divine power in them that can be used to heal wounds. The pool can also be used to cure diseases. Your pool will replenish after a long rest. Leveled up abilities As Paladins advance, they will gain more special abilities. What is the Paladin Sacred Oath? At the 3rd level, Paladins take a Sacred Oath.

Which Paladin Oath should you pick? (DnD 5E)
A couple of interesting racial abilities and feats are a boost. Radiant consumption is excellent for cloud control, and Necrotic Shroud works very well on a paladin. A cool thing about having an Aasimar Paladin is that you can fly. You also get a few early-game spellcasting abilities that help you pull your weight as a paladin in the early levels. Another great thing the Satyr paladin has is its significant magic resistance. This magic resistance is excellent to help you tank when you are fighting on the frontlines, and your enemies have spells like fear, stun, paralyze, levitate , and so on. Because Satyrs have extra movement, they can quickly close the gap with your enemies when you unleash your smiths upon them. Best Race for paladin conclusion If you want to choose the best Race for a paladin in 5e DnD, you have many options, all content for that title.
Your powerful lord stands before you, reciting an oath that you repeat, committing yourself to the tenets. From now on, you are not a fighter with a slew of weapons and armour; you are not a scholar of magical spells; you are the righteous paladin of this oath who will carve a legend into the history books with tales of your devotion. The only question is: what are you devoted to? Here are some quick summaries of each subclass, which will give a bit of insight to the theme, generalized game mechanics, and the likely play style to expect. Your interpretation may differ, and if it does, please share how! Whether it be a law, justice, or an authoritative figure, this is the knight who values their word and loyalty above anything else. Game Mechanics: Additional spells include utility and protection spells, like protection from evil and good, or sanctuary. They are able to magically enhance their weapon to do additional damage and create light. The devotion paladin can also turn undead or fiends, making them run away in fear. At later levels, they have an aura to protect themselves and allies against being charmed. Play-style: You want to play the honorable knight, healing the injured, protecting the weak, and showing how great your honour is. You like to reserve your spells for role-play, and focus on your weapons for combat. The ancient oath works with all kinds of nature to vanquish those who would seed evil into otherwise peaceful grounds. Game Mechanics: Additional spells, with a nature focus, work to control movement and interact with plants and animals. They can call upon nature to root enemies in place, or to turn fey and fiends. At later levels, they gain a powerful aura to reduce all spell damage by half, and eventually gain the ability to come back from 0 hp. Play-style: You like the idea of playing to an oath that is above society and people.
The Peerless Athlete Feature now lasts one hour instead of ten minutes. Lastly, Aura of Alacrity will now enhance Aura of Protection and provide a greater range for the feature than in previous versions. Aura of Warding will now enhance the Aura of Protection, providing resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage. Finally, the Elder Champion is now a Bonus Action, and its benefits apply to all your spells, and you can restore a use of this feature by expending a 5th-level spell slot. Vow of Enmity can now be moved to another creature if and when the previous creature drops to 0 hit points before it ends and has had its range increased to 30 feet. Finally, the Avenging Angel feature can be used as a Bonus Action and now has a 10-minute duration instead of an hour. Like the Elder Champion, you can regain a use of this feature by expending a 5th-level spell slot. Having Lay on Hands being a Bonus Action will be very helpful in tight situations, and the flow of the class progression looks to be a nicer experience that constantly provides new features or changes, keeping things interesting throughout your time playing.
D&D Paladin Level Up – a step by step guide (5e)
Aura of Conquest 5 — This aura ties to your CD and spell options, giving the subclass a very cohesive feel, the effect of the aura itself is also very powerful. Being able to lock down a frightened creature, and automatically doing damage to them, is a quick path to victory. This feature benefits from gaining as many ways to impose the frightened condition as possible and having a higher save DC against that condition. Scornful Rebuke 5 — Automatic damage, of a good type, whenever someone hits you? What pushes this ability into a 5 is this working at range and both with weapons and spells. Redemption A more social and reactive Paladin, the Oath of Redemption focuses on avoiding conflict or mitigating its consequences. This is executed through spells like Sleep , Calm Emotions, and Hypnotic Pattern, as well as Persuasion buffing, and punitive options for Channel Divinity. This subclass makes a strong candidate for the Charisma-focused, support Paladin playstyle. Emissary of Peace [CD] 4 — A social ability is nice to see on a martial, a duration of 10 minutes makes it useful for entire social encounters. To get the most out of this ability you really need proficiency in Persuasion and a decent Cha modifier.
Rebuke the Violent [CD] 5 — As enemy damage increases, this option will naturally scale in usefulness. Oath Spells 3 — Whilst the spells are very appropriate for the subclass, they run into problems of usefulness and scaling. That said having these spells as options is nice, and Hypnotic Pattern and Wall of Force are very useful control spells. Aura of the Guardian 2 — A slightly better version of the 7th level Oath of the Crown feature. Protective Spirit 4 — This is a very healthy amount of hp regeneration with some minor scaling built-in for the remaining levels. Note: As it is not stated, when you halve your Paladin level for this feature, you should round down. Emissary of Redemption 3 — Unfortunately, this is a mixed bag, whilst it fulfills the goal of the subclass and provides great benefits, using a lot of your core class features would negate this benefit entirely. This is best for support Paladins who focus on buffs and healing, or who are content with dealing with minions whilst other party members deal with the heavy-hitting enemies. Glory You thought Conquest was a different spin for a Paladin?
Glory focuses on propelling you and your companions to legendary status by focusing on honing their body and skill and putting them to use through acts of courage. Inspiring Smite [CD] 2 — Whilst you can in theory apply these temporary hit points to as many creatures as you have temp hp, realistically for this ability to be worth anything you need to keep the number of creatures to one or two. The use of your bonus action feels a little clunky and makes the activation of this ability dependent on not only multiple factors, but spending an entirely separate resource. This would have easily been a 3 if you could activate it as a bonus action independently. The range should have been at least 10 feet to start with to make the ability more feasible. This still warrants a 2, as a self-speed bump of 10ft can be useful to a melee character in particular. Glorious Defense 3 — This can be a very potent defensive and retribution ability, however, it is held back by requiring the party to stay tightly clustered together in melee range of the enemy and tying the number of uses to your Charisma modifier for some reason. Watchers Sworn to protect the world from extraplanar threats, this subclass is dedicated to being the ever-vigilant sentry against the threats who seek to invade from beyond our own world. Interestingly these Paladins are said to create and maintain a network of spies and informants, in order to keep an eye on any cult activity.
Notably, they get access to typically more arcane magic, including Alarm and Counterspell. Oath Spells 3 — A thematic list, with a lot of utility in it. It would have been nice to see some better combat-relevant entries. Mortal Bulwark 4 — This is a very powerful ability, mixing general combat effectiveness with the ability to potentially just end an encounter. This only warrants a 4 because it covers a lot of creature types, but not all of them, and a capstone should ideally not be this niche. Guidance [Cantrip] — Applicable if you chose the Blessed Warrior Fighting Style, this is a very useful cantrip to pick up to help your party pass the skill checks which really matter. Bless [1st level Spell] — Not only great for support Paladins, this spell, unfortunately, takes your entire action, but rewards the party with a significant boost to their accuracy and save defense. Cure Wounds [1st level Spell] — Whilst you have Lay on Hands, it never hurts to have another option for healing yourself and your party. This can be especially useful if you need to use your Lay on Hands to cure a disease or neutralize a poison, rather than heal hit point damage.
Divine Favor [1st level Spell] — A damage boosting alternative to Divine Smite, this is a great spell for longer fights, or if you need to spread radiant damage, such as shutting down the regeneration of vampire spawn. Protection from Evil and Good [1st level Spell] — A great defensive buff that works against a large enough number of creature types to be relevant frequently enough to keep on hand. Aid [2nd level Spell] — Not to be confused with temporary hit points, this spell increases your actual hit point maximum, meaning you can heal these newfound points. This is a great durability buff for your party and is especially useful for lower hit dice characters like Wizards. Find Steed [2nd level Spell] — Being able to summon your own mount, enhanced with a telepathic and magical link, is a very useful means of transportation. Small-sized Paladins can actually ride their mastiffs into those places! Here are some examples of strong race choices for a Paladin: Dragonborn 4 — Great stats, a damage resistance, and a breath weapon! Goblin 5 — A perfect Dexadin, bringing additional nova damage in the form of Fury of the Small, whilst giving you the ability to skirmish with Nimble Escape. Half-Elf 5 — You can boost your Charisma, Constitution, and the physical stat of your choice, whilst getting skills and some other nice ribbons.
A great Paladin, regardless your primary stat, and potentially frees up an ASI for a feat. Combat-orientated feats are generally better for Paladins, however, feats which provide additional spellcasting can be valuable for the half casting class, especially support Paladins, and this will be reflected in their rating and description. Here are some examples of strong feat choices for a Paladin: Great Weapon Master 5 — A potential damage boost and source of bonus action attacks, for Paladins using great weapons this is a great feat. This is particularly useful for Vengeance and Conquest Paladins, as they both have accuracy-increasing Channel Divinity options. Sentinel 5 — Excellent tanking feat, this will allow you to make reaction attacks more often and give you the ability to lock down the battlefield. Dragon Fear [Dragonborn] 4 — You can round out your choice of three different stats, all great for Paladins, and gain a good debuff that synergizes well with a Conquest Paladin. Slasher 5 — If you favor slashing weapons like longswords, scimitars, and great axes this feat gives you a great way to hinder the mobility of your enemies and adds a nasty debuff when you crit, to add insult to smite-based injury. The ratings take multiclassing prerequisites into consideration; if a multiclass will require you to have a 13 in a stat other than Str or Cha, it will likely receive a lower score unless the stat is one you would already have at 13 or higher, for example, Dexterity on a Dexadin.
You like the nature loving side of druids, but want to use weapons and armor with a only a dash of magical spells. Advertisements Batman — DC Comics Oath of Vengeance PHB Theme: Perseverant and persistent, the paladin of vengeance will tear down any obstacle to find justice, punishing those that have wronged them or others. Game Mechanics: Central abilities focus on frightening and reducing enemies ability to move, or enhance your ability to catch up to opponents. At higher levels, this paladin can move with opportunity attacks and, at their highest level, are able to fly. Play-style: You want to play the unstoppable force that is determined to get their objective. Whether it be by enhancing your abilities or preventing the opponent, your focus is always on closing the gap between you and the goal. Judge Dredd — Dredd Oath of the Crown SCAG Theme: Sworn to maintaining law and sense of order, the crown paladin is determined to find the most diplomatic way for everyone to get along and, if they cannot, to quell those that foster sedition. In the most dire circumstances, this paladin will sacrifice themselves for the good of others. Game Mechanics: Possibly the most tank-like Paladin, this class has the ability to prevent enemies from moving away from them, healing their allies, and taking damage that would otherwise hurt their friends. At later levels, they have an advantage to being paralyze or stunned, and gain a significant amount of saving throw advantages at their highest level. Play-style: You like to play someone who can lead: someone who will seek the truth and room for peace between people. In combat, you like to think of the strengths and weaknesses of your entire team as a whole rather than the individual. Conquering others is easy if they already defeat themselves with despair. This paladin lives for the subjugation of their enemies. Game Mechanics: Heavy concentration on frightening opponents, with the choice to sometimes ensure a single hit gets a massive attack bonus. Additional spells revolve around manipulating others. When the opponents will resists your fright, you want to have a wealth of tools to play with their resilience.
Even without smites, they keep pace fairly well with a fighter until level 10 as both get the same number of attacks. On top of this, you also get a fighting style to enhance your combat. At mid tier levels, they get access to auras that increase the saving throws of allies and make them immune to frightened. You can also take fighting styles that help you protect allies too like interception and protection. Backup healers: Paladins are not proper healers like druids and clerics, but being able to rely on lay on hands for even a single hp when an ally is down is hugely valuable, rather than potentially wasting your efforts with a medicine check. Face skills: Paladins rely a lot on charisma which inadvertently makes them a great face for the party. Despite their versatility, they do in fact have weaknesses: Stealth: Paladins generally need to invest in strength, constitution and charisma leaving little else for other abilities like dexterity. You armor proficiency will sort this out. You can swap out strength for dexterity and go for finesse weapons, but this is a little harder to balance, especially with so many ability scores to optimise and when armor is so easy to up your AC instead. This makes you poor at sneaking about in your clunky armor unless you take it off and go in unprotected. Ranged combat: Similarly, without a high dexterity, paladins tend to be poor at ranged combat. There are some weapons with the thrown property which are your best options here. Paladin spells generally enhance rather than form a full attack like a fireball. How to play as a paladin Paladins are widely considered one of the stronger classes. They are tough with lots of HP, access to all armour types for high AC and spells that can enhance this too , deal lots of damage especially when paired with smites and can heal. Because of this, paladins tend to work best in the thick of melee combat. Despite this, there are a few ways to approach combat with a paladin that you can use depending on the style of play you want to use: Tank Good for: Soaking up damage, dealing melee damage, protecting less durable party members. Creating a tank: High strength for melee weapons , high constitution, heavy armor to increase AC full plate if you can afford it , take a shield too. Focus on spells and fighting styles that will help you last longer in combat like shield of faith and defense. At low levels, this will make you extremely difficult to hit with 21-23AC if you can get full plate but tends to mean you do less damage during combat. Holy Warrior Good for: Dealing high damage, still reasonably durable and very much a frontline combatant Creating a warrior: High strength for melee weapons , high constitution, heavy armor to increase AC full plate if you can afford it. Two-handed weapons are best with the great weapon fighting style but if you opt for a sword and shield which is statistically a better build then the dueling fighting style can help compensate for some of the lost damage output. Use your spell slots on smites to maximise your damage output. How it works: holy warrior builds are also great at wading into combat, and while they can definitely soak up a fair bit of damage, will lack the AC of a tank build to absorb as many attacks.

This darkness built up inside of them until it changed them forever. On one such a mission, after purging a village which had grown infected by the undead they no longer believed in their mission and fell into darkness. Casting off their oath and last bit of humanity. I think a character like this can be tricky to play as it requires utilizing accumulated trauma as a mechanism for your characters decisions, but if you are up for the challenge then there is some amazing role-playing moments you can conjure up. In a rare case for our supplementary character designs I went with a mono color and one that opposes our core color.
This choice was very deliberate. With White being a color of collective responsibility and justice, while Black is instead the color of individualism and moral relativism. Where White places its purpose into the hands of a higher ideal, Black places its purpose solely with itself and its own desires. So in this way they shed their oath which bound them to a higher ideal, an ideal they found to be a lie and in this way cast their trust completely into their own hands.
Now of course the rejection came with a steep price, they now push back fully against everything that their previous oath stood for and have become something of a villain themselves. CONCLUSION Now that we have built a few characters lets discuss each of the colors and how they can be used in relation to the paladin, that way you can mix and match to create your own. Ah yes that thing I told you to abandon in place of the color pie, well it does have its uses and I think I can illustrate something by doing so. At the heart of every Paladin is the core alignment of Lawful, something you could hardly escape, because in many ways an oath is a law you have set to be the focus of your life.
Now of all of the colors there is one who applies to lawful the most, and that would be white. So just in the same way you would make your Paladin almost always lawful with some combination of good, neutral, or evil its the same with White. Place White at the heart of your paladin and then add colors on top of it to drive its motivation further. Speaking of other colors what about the one color missing in all of the examples so far, Blue.
In the case of the Blue paladin we would be talking about a more logical view of Justice rather than one based in morality. Its a logical path to a better world, something we talk about when discussing what values Blue and White share. Then we have Black. This color often will reject an oath in that an oath to uphold the ideals of someone else goes against Blacks wish to focus on ones own needs, it can have trouble doing things for others unless they truly believe in it themselves.
In another way Black can be used to add a layer of ruthlessness to a Paladin who does follow an oath and can have dire consequences, as their actions would be total and unwavering. The next color is one I could see you using pretty often for the Paladin and that is Red, as Red adds a level of fanaticism to any color it is paired with.
Paladins are required to be Lawful, which means you need to role play specific ideals. Limited skill utility.
Paladins rely on other classes for Intelligence and Wisdom-based skill tests. They are proficient with heavy armor. You have no reason to have a high Dexterity score, so you can safely dump it. Constitution: Paladins are arguably the most durable and self-sufficient class in the game.
By keeping your Constitution nice and high, you ensure your survivability. Intelligence: You can safely dump this stat. Wisdom: Paladins are high-Charisma characters, and benefit from social skills. Charisma: Your Paladin abilities are all tied to Charisma.
Scourge: The added durability is welcome. BugbearVGtM: Strength and reach make you powerful. Dragonborn: Strength and Constitution increases, energy resistance, and a breath weapon. Dwarf: The Constitution increase is welcome.
Elf: Elves are naturally lithe and dexterous, where Paladin looks for Brute Strength. Drow: Sunlight sensitivity is a huge drawback. EladrinMToF: Charisma, and the teleportation ability make a nice combo. High Elf: Not useful for Paladin.
Wood Elf: Not useful for Paladin. Some innate spellcasting. Earth: Strength and Constitution, plus some additional abilities. Fire: Not useful for Paladin.
Water: Not useful for Paladin. Githyanki: Strength increase, but otherwise not useful. Githzerai: Not useful for Paladin. Gnome: Nothing Gnome has to offer is useful for Paladins.
Forest: Not useful for Paladin. Rock: Not useful for Paladin. GoblinVGtM: A hilarious choice, your movement and Fury of the Small can be useful, but other races are generally better. Half-Elf: The best overall choice for Paladin, and a great choice for any class at all.
Charisma, and your choice of two others but make them Strength and Constitution Standard: Two free skills! If you really want Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade, go with the feat so you at least get a 1st level spell out of it as well. Half-Orc: Good stat increases, speed, and a skill. Stout: Extra durability in a small frame.
Human: Humans are a very versatile race that work well in any class. Variant: You can still increase your main stats, and you have an option to pick up a feat at first level. OrcVGtM: Half-orc is strictly better. And the Eberron variant is the better use of the Orc race.
TabaxiVGtM: feline agility functions even in heavy armor, so this race is actually viable for Paladin. Some of the subraces add even more. Standard: The basic Tiefling grants abilities that help out, but some other variants are better. LevistusMToF: The spells are very useful, but this subrace causes you to miss out on key ability score buffs.
ZarielMToF: Good ability score increases, spells, and extra smites. TritonVGtM:Perfect ability score spread, spellcasting, and resistance. Two skills, and disguise. Beasthide: Strength and Constitution, and a free skill.
The temporary hit points you gain while shifting are a great perk as well. Longtooth: A less favorable ability score increase, but the extra attack granted by your shifting more than makes up for it. Swiftstride: Not useful for Paladin. Wildhunt: Not useful for Paladin.
Strength, a flexible ability score increase, natural armor, AC bonus, and the vigilance to keep watch over a sleeping party. Totally flexible, and lots of great options. Class Features Hit Dice: d10 hit points put you at the top of the hit point game. Weapon Proficiencies: All weapons.
The best kind. Armor Proficiencies: All armor and shields. Tool Proficiencies: None. Lay On Hands: This is the most efficient healing ability in the game.
Fighting Style: Paladins get a smaller list of fighting styles than Fighters do, but there are still solid options on the list. The reroll does not apply to Smite damage dice, making it less useful. If you plan on using two-handed weapons, pick Defense instead to compensate for your lack of a shield. Protection: Tempting, but it only works with adjacent allies.
Spellcasting: Paladin spellcasting is a nice mix of defensive buffs and healing. Your Smite spells are unique to your class, and powerful options for your swordsmanship. Burning spell slots on your Divine Smite is also a great use of spells. Using the Smite spells, such as Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, and Wrathful Smite can do decent damage with helpful additional effects which may be more situationally useful than the small amount of extra damage that Divine Smite provides.
Extra Attack: A second attack doubles your damage output. Cleansing Touch: A great way to un-curse your allies without using a spell slot. The abilities granted are a mix of crowd control options and strong offensive options.

For example, if you are a 5th-level paladin, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Charisma of 14, your list of prepared spells can include four spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell Cure Wounds , you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level slot. You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of paladin spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list. Spellcasting Ability Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your paladin spells, since their power derives from the strength of your convictions. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a paladin spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. Divine Health By 3rd level, the divine magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease. Sacred Oath When you reach 3rd level, you swear the oath that binds you as a paladin forever.
Up to this time you have been in a preparatory stage, committed to the path but not yet sworn to it. Now you choose an oath, such as the Oath of Devotion. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature. Oath Spells Each oath has a list of associated spells. You gain access to these spells at the levels specified in the oath description. Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared. Channel Divinity Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects. Each Channel Divinity option provided by your oath explains how to use it.
Which subclass should I choose? Oaths tend to form a large part of the ideals for your paladin, so a paladin seeking to make restitution for past crimes might take the oath of redemption while paladins seeking to exact righteous judgement on their foes might take the oath of vengeance. Oath of Devotion Description: Holy warriors, devoted to their cause. Good for: Archetypal paladins with a broad mix of abilities. Oath of the Ancients Description: Paladins that seek to wage war against darkness for a love of light and life.
Good for: Paladins that want to be a bit more like a ranger. Good for: Paladins that want to exact as much damage as possible, as quickly as possible. Good for: Paladins that have broken their oaths. Good for: Paladins that want to go big on protecting their allies. Oath of Conquest Description: A paladin sworn to conquer and bring about victory.

Good for: Paladins that like to throw themselves into combat.
Oath of the Watchers Description: A paladin that watches for and protects from the unnatural and alien forces of the universe. Good for: Paladins that want to deal with extra-planar threats. How to optimise a paladin Optimising a character properly can be tricky. Options to avoid: Intelligence and wisdom. Only invest in one of strength and dexterity usually strength.
Innate spellcasting options can work nicely as you can make repeat uses. Races that grant you resistances, increased damage and mobility are also great Think Warforged with their resistances and extra AC or Shadar-Kai with their misty step plus damage ability. Backgrounds Recommended options: City watch, courtier, faceless, faction agent, gambler, smuggler, soldier Options to avoid: Archaeologist, fisher, folk hero, inheritor, ruined Considerations: Primarily, you want your background to beef out your skills you only get 2 skill proficiencies with your class. Skills Recommended options: Athletics, insight, intimidation, persuasion Options to avoid: Medicine, religion Considerations: Persuasion is going to be your most important face skill but intimidation can be great too.
But, if it comes to combat, they can take the damage dealt by their opponents and deal it right back at them. At later levels, you will be able to take damage intended for your allies, heal yourself at every turn, and ultimately have resistance to all damage.
Play-style: A stark contrast from the paladin of conquest, you enjoy the diplomacy and interrogation of others. To you, violence and physical confrontation means failure. However, if you do need to defend your friends, you want to see yourself as the equal and opposing force to the enemy. People are just obstacles to be dismissed from your path of dominance. Game Mechanics: Additional spells have a heavy focus on attacking and animating the dead. They can emit an aura of fear to turn opponents.
At later levels, the oathbreaker can deal additional melee damage, granting this bonus to their allies ie. At higher levels, the oathbreaker gains resistance to some forms of damage and, within a powerful aura, can cause a growing darkness to surround them and harm those that dare to try and attack. Play-style: Although intended as a villainous class to use the undead to attack enemies, a player may be able to focus more on the element of utilizing the dead as allies in fighting for good. In either case, you want to focus paladin spells on attacking, and to have a regiment of undead by your side. Alex Louise Armstrong Fullmetal Alchemist Oath of Glory MOT Theme: Glorious Paladins aim to add pages to the legends of themselves and their deities by performing extraordinary athletic feats, not only in combat, but in adventure too. They value a sound body to find a sound mind.
Game Mechanics: Use channel divinity to gain 10 minutes of advantageous athletics and acrobatics, while also able to carry, push, and drag twice as much weight as normal. Jumping distances also increase by 10 ft during this period. Additionally, they are able to use divinity to distribute temporary hit points to allies within 30ft once they deal damage to a creature.
Turn the Unholy: Lv. Oath Spells overall rating : Lv. All of these are quality spells that are mostly already on the Paladin list. They skew towards buffs or healing spells, though there are a few damaging spells thrown in for good measure. Sanctuary for example is great at protecting a healer. Aura of Devotion: Lv.
Getting immunity to charm for yourself and allies within the Aura is very powerful. Essentially immunity to spells like Suggestion, Dominate and Geas, as well as to equally nasty monster Charm abilities like those from vampires and succubi. Purity of Spirit: Lv. Aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead will always have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. The benefits of this will definitely be felt against hordes of weaker enemies of these types. Holy Nimbus: Lv. Great against hordes of enemies, morse specifically hordes of undead or fiends who are vulnerable to radiant damage.
Does not count as a spell, and does not require a saving throw, it just does damage. The advantage on saving throws is a nice addition. Consider the nature-themed Oath that gives you bonuses against Fey creatures. The Oath of the Ancients sees you protected from Magic damage from spells along with some great defensive utility options. If your campaign sees you fighting mages or wandering through the Feywild then this could be a strong choice. Not off to a strong start, using your action to restrainin is nice but the range is short. Turn the Faithless: Lv.
Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools. Aura of Warding: Lv. Cuts all damage from spells against you and allies in your aura in half! Undying Sentinel: Lv. Elder Champion: Lv.
Become the avatar of the forest and regain some health every turn. Takes the action to cast Elder champion, but with forewarning you may be able to trigger it before battle. The Oath of Vengeance is all about dishing out incredible damage to one target at a time. Find the biggest, baddest target you can find, sear Vengeance upon them and go to town. Abjure Enemy: Lv.
