A legendary fashion designer who is only adding to his equally legendary resume at this point, Owens has achieved loads of success since launching his first fashion show on Hollywood Boulevard in 1994 and making the game changing decision to relocate his brand to Paris in the early 2000s. In this latter category is the soon-to-be-released collaboration between Paris-based fashion designer Rick Owens and Birkenstock, the German maker of strappy, contoured-footbed sandals, that will be stomping into Los Angeles later this month. Fashion is now one aspect, but different disciplines will follow. The exterior was designed by Gonzalez Haase; the interior of the one that will be in L. Birkenstock Reichert was less circumspect when it came to highlighting what made Owens a good collaborator. There is so much more than clothes. Here are some excerpts from that conversation. When did Birkenstock first cross your radar? I remember [them] as a kid growing up in Porterville [Calif]. I remember Birkenstock having a counterculture allure then.
Who was wearing Birkenstocks at that time? Also, the kind of people that wore them seemed to be a little more active and outdoorsy so that had tremendous appeal too. Do you wear Birkenstocks?
Everything for the cause. And the cause is above everything. It featured an exaggerated tongue, a padded collar, a crepe sole with a rubber sidewall stitched and reinforced with staples at the heel, and a medial zipper for ease of access. He stated his intention for this athletic-inspired high-top sneaker was to create "monster trucks" for your feet. His following collection, "Dustulator FW06", received critical acclaim and featured the fully-realized version of his new sneaker.
A later version of the sneaker was inspired by the Adidas logo for his "Crust FW09" collection. Despite the alleged letter sent from Nike, the sneaker was available in its original form for retail sale as late as 2010. The Rick Owens "Dunk" sneaker was then replaced by the Geobasket sneaker which features no potentially infringing design elements, and instead features geometric panels. His furniture was originally custom-designed and tailored for his own use while in Paris. He occasionally incorporates a pair of antlers, mimicking asymmetric wings to a pair of chairs. Taschen has known Owens and his wife since they lived in Los Angeles.
